Masters Countdown: The nine best possible Sunday final pairings
Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler. Jason Day and Adam Scott. Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy. What are the best possible final day pairings at Augusta National?
Last year's final three pairings on Sunday at the Masters are going to be pretty tough to beat this time around: Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose; Phil Mickelson and Charley Hoffman;Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. My goodness! What time did Ben Hogan and Old Tom Morris tee off?!
But it's always fun to dream a week in advance about who's going to be teeing it up last on Sunday at the Masters. And it matters, too. From 1991-2015, the green jacket winner has come from the final pairing 21 times. Only Zach Johnson (2007), Charl Schwartzel (2011), Bubba Watson (2012) and Adam Scott (2013) have come from outside of that pairing to win.
So let's look at the nine best possible final pairings for Sunday at Augusta.
1. Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth: All of it. I want it all. I want 10 majors of them playing in the final group together. I want 20. We only got one major finish where Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods finished 1-2. I hope we get more than that from these two.
2. Rory McIlroy and Jason Day: You saw their Match Play Championship duel last week, right? I'm not a body language doctor, but the handshake on the final green was a couple of beats shorter than I thought it would be. Day recently sort of called out Jordan Spieth for traveling too much. McIlroy came to Spieth's defense. Is there a bit of rivalry budding? I'm hopeful.
3. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler: All of the presses!
4. Adam Scott and Jason Day: Come on Aussie.

5. Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth: The American dream. Can we start calling them that rolling into the Ryder Cup later this year? We saw this final pairing in the third round of the U.S. Open last year. It did not go well. This could be some redemption. They'll have to dye the pimiento cheese blue and red because U-S-A! U-S-A! will be resounding throughout Amen Corner for hours.
6. Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy: I'm not sure Jim Nantz could handle this. An amateur going for the Masters and a legend going for the career Slam? Wow.
7. Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson: Just a missile-launching extravaganza for five hours on Sunday afternoon. They would take lines that will make grown men breathe into brown paper bags. Their putting probably will too.
8. Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler: How much fun would this be?
9. Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy: I'm reminded of the cold-blooded way McIlroy took the 2014 Wannamaker away from Lefty and Fowler. That would be fun to watch down the back side on Sunday afternoon. Over/under on words uttered after No. 9: 3.5.
