SAN DIEGO -- Thursday morning of the annual MLB Winter Meetings is usually quiet, aside from the Rule 5 draft. Well, there's been a flurry of moves this time around, but the Rule 5 draft still took place, so let's pass along what happened.

As a quick primer, the Rule 5 draft takes place each year at the Winter Meetings. Teams pick in reverse order of last season's standings. They can choose any player from another team not on a 40-man roster who has been under contract for either four of five years (depending upon when they signed). Teams don't have to select a player, but if they do, they need to leave him on the MLB roster all season -- otherwise they have to offer him back to his original team.

Some of the more famous contemporary Rule 5 picks, meaning under the present structure: Johan Santana, Dan Uggla, Josh Hamilton and Shane Victorino.

So, yes, teams can grab useful players, though it often isn't the case.

Here are the 13 selections in the 2014 MLB Rule 5 draft:

1. Diamondbacks pick Oscar Hernandez from Rays
2. Rockies pick Mark Canha from Marlins (Rockies then traded him to A's)
3. Rangers pick Delino DeShields Jr. from Astros
4. Astros pick Jason Garcia from Red Sox (Astros then traded him to Orioles)
5. Twins pick J.R. Graham from Braves
6. Red Sox pick Jandel Gustave from Astros (Red Sox traded him to Royals)
8. Cubs pick Taylor Featherston from Rockies (Cubs then traded him to Angels for cash)
9. Phillies pick Odubel Herrera from Rangers
11. Marlins pick Andrew McKirahan from Cubs
14. Mets pick Sean Gilmartin from Twins
15. Braves pick Daniel Winkler from Rockies
20. Mariners pick David Rollins from Astros
28. Orioles pick Logan Verrett from Mets

As usual, there aren't many exciting names in there. Let's touch on a few of the more notable ones.

Canha hit .303/.384/.505 with 20 homers in Triple-A last season.

DeShields had 54 steals in Double-A last season, but he hit just .236/.346/.360.

Herrera hit .321 with 12 steals in 96 games in Double-A last year.

McKirahan had a 2.08 ERA in 65 innings across High-A and Double-A in 2014.

Gilmartin was 9-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 26 starts in Double-A and Triple-A.

Winkler was 5-2 with a 1.41 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 70 innings in Double-A.

Verrett was 11-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 28 Triple-A starts (in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League with roughly half his starts coming in the launching pad in Vegas).
