Congratulations 2012 San Francisco Giants
And like that, there was one standing. A total of 29 other teams rest in peace, but the Giants stand alone atop baseball. Congratulations to 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Let us celebrate the season that was.

And like that, there was one standing. A total of 29 other teams rest in peace, but the Giants stand alone atop baseball. Congratulations to 2012 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. Let us celebrate the season that was.
What went right
What went right? What didn't go right? The Giants put together one of the most amazing postseason runs in recent history -- first rallying in the National League Division Series against the Reds and then again in the National League Championship Series against the Cardinals before dominating the Tigers in the World Series. It seemed just about every move Bruce Bochy made was magical, and the results are obvious.
What went wrong
Not much. And even what went wrong turned out right. Tim Lincecum struggled during the regular season and then he's a relief ace in the playoffs. Brian Wilson is lost for the season in April, and the bullpen turns out to be a strength even without their dominant closer. Have the batting title leader test positive for PEDs and miss the last 45 games of the regular season while your biggest rival makes two of the biggest trades of the season? No problem, cruise to the division title. And then, even though he's eligible, the team kept Melky Cabrera off the active roster and won the World Series anyway. Buster Posey, the likely regular-season MVP, struggles at the plate throughout the postseason, yet the team scores enough to win anyway. Barry freaking Zito starts Game 1 of the World Series against Justin Verlander and wins the matchup easily? Ryan Theriot in his first ever start as a DH in Game 4 of the World Series and he comes through with a 10th-inning leadoff hit and scores the winning run? What went wrong? Nothing, pretty much.

MVP: Posey is the odds-on favorite to win the National League Most Valuable Player, so there's little doubt he's the pick here.
LVP: Is it weird that the guy who had a better batting average than anyone else in the league and was the MVP of the All-Star Game is your LVP? Well, Melky Cabrera, who served a 50-game suspension, was obvioulsy not needed for the Giants to win the World Series.
MLB free agents to be: OF Melky Cabrera, 2B Freddy Sanchez, INF Marco Scutaro, LHP Jeremy Affeldt, OF Angel Pagan, INF Ryan Theriot, RHP Guillermo Mota, OF Xavier Nady, RHP Brad Penny.
Offseason gameplan
The Giants have to decide on their outfield -- Cabrera, Nady and Pagan are all free agents and Pence is in his fourth and final year of arbitration. Pence made $10.4 million last year and it would be unlikely he'd get any less in arbitration, though he may not get that much as a free agent. The Giants could non-tender Pence and still try to re-sign him. Pagan came up big in the postseason, but the Giants could go all-in to get Michael Bourn, leaving Pagan to go elsewhere.
Ridiculously premature prediction
There's no way any team gets that lucky two seasons in a row -- the breaks go against the Giants in 2013 and the high-priced Dodgers (or the Diamondbacks) win the always competitive NL West.
