The Pirates have recalled prospect catcher Tony Sanchez from Triple-A Indianapolis, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review announced Friday.
Sanchez, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft, has a .951 OPS at Indianapolis after a pair of disappointing years in the high minors in 2011 (.658 OPS at Double-A Altoona) and 2012 (.739 OPS between Altoona and Indianapolis). At 25, Sanchez finally looks to be making good on his potential. Sanchez may be up to replace Michael McKenry as the backup catcher, as McKenry is hitting just .210/.264/.370 in 81 at-bats.
