Everyone knows the Yankees have been hit hard by injuries this year. They've used the DL more than any other team so far, plus they have a few players on the active roster nursing minor injuries. One of those players is shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who is day-to-day with a rib-cage problem.
With Nunez out, the Yankees do not have a backup infielder on the roster at the moment. On Wednesday night, after pinch-hitting Travis Hafner for third baseman Chris Nelson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of a tie game, New York was in a bind. They didn't have another infielder, but in came Vernon Wells to save the day. He played the hot corner for the first time since high school and, naturally, he made a nice play ranging to his left:
If that wasn't good enough, Wells also went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and an infield single that started his team's winning ninth-inning rally. Not a bad day at all.
