Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Struggles with command in return
McKenzie (0-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on one hit, six walks and no strikeouts over 1.2 innings against the Orioles.
McKenzie (elbow) was making just his third start of the season and first since June 10. He could never find his command in walking six batters while throwing just 19 of 52 pitches for strikes. Following a promising first inning, he gave up three runs in the second and was pulled after a third consecutive walk allowed the third run to cross the plate. The most important development for McKenzie, who had a 2.96 ERA over 191.1 innings in 2022, is that he appears to have left this start healthy. If the Guardians decide to roll him out for one more start, it will likely take place next weekend in Detroit.

Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Reinstated for Sunday's start
McKenzie (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start Sunday against the Orioles.
The right-hander is expected to be limited to about five innings and 80 pitches in his first major-league start since June 10. McKenzie missed the first two months of the season with a shoulder strain and made just two starts before he suffered a UCL sprain. McKenzie (elbow) worked 3.2 innings and struck out two while giving up three earned runs on three hits and one walk in the second start of his rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Columbus.
McKenzie tossed 62 pitches (37 strikes) in the rehab outing, with his fastball topping out at 94.4 miles per hour, per SI.com. Though McKenzie gave up two home runs in the start, he looked healthy and turned in velocity readings that were roughly in line with what he had been posting prior to landing on the shelf June 17 with a right elbow sprain. McKenzie (elbow) completed a bullpen session at Progressive Field on Monday and has been cleared to face live hitters at High-A Lake County on Friday, MLB.com reports.
McKenzie and Shane Bieber (elbow) were both cleared to advance to the next phase of their respective recovery programs after the two experienced no issues during their bullpen sessions Monday. Bieber is scheduled to face hitters Thursday before McKenzie does the same Friday, and if all goes well, the right-handers could get the green light to begin minor-league rehab assignments the following week. Per Brian Dulik of the Associated Press, Francona said McKenzie and Bieber will both be activated from the 60-day injured list once they're capable of handling 85-pitch workloads. Francona offered up Sept. 20 as a tentative target date for both pitchers' reinstatements.

According to the report, McKenzie was able to play catch on five consecutive days without issue, a good sign as he continues his recovery from a right UCL sprain. He remains hopeful to pitch again for the big club in 2023, but until he reaches the point in his rehab where he's facing live hitters, the Guardians likely won't offer up a concrete target date for his return from the 60-day injured list. Based on where he currently stands in his rehab program, McKenzie is likely at least a month away from rejoining the Cleveland rotation in a best-case scenario.

Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Moved to 60-day IL
The Guardians transferred McKenzie (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
The move ensures McKenzie will be out until at least mid-August, but chances are he'll be sidelined past then. McKenzie will remain shut down from throwing for another three weeks before potentially beginning a throwing program with the goal of returning late in the season. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Vallimont, who was acquired Thursday from Baltimore in exchange for cash considerations.

Guardians' Triston McKenzie: Shut down three more weeks
McKenzie (elbow) will remain shut down for three more weeks, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
McKenzie has already been shut down for more than two weeks after being diagnosed with partially torn right UCL in mid-June. He will attempt to rehab the injury with rest, with the goal of starting a throwing program later this month and eventually returning late in the season. Of course, Tommy John surgery is always a possibility with this type of injury if rest and rehab doesn't do the trick.
