Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Odd man out for roster spot
The Tigers optioned Perez to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The 26-year-old was the early favorite to begin the season as Detroit's primary right fielder, but he'll instead open the campaign in the minors after batting .158 (6-for-38) with no extra-base hits across 16 spring training games. Top prospect Kevin McGonigle is essentially the roster replacement for Perez, but it'll likely be Matt Vierling that benefits the most from the demotion. Perez had a .738 OPS in 383 plate appearances during the regular season last year and should still get a look with the Tigers at some point in 2026.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Quiet spring so far
Across 11 Grapefruit League games, Perez has gone 4-for-24 with seven strikeouts.
Perez had a promising sophomore campaign in 2025, as he increased his production from 2024 across the board to finish with a career-best 13 home runs, 43 RBI and a .738 OPS across 100 regular-season contests. He's off to a sluggish start this spring but should still have the inside track to the starting role in right field. Utility man Matt Vierling could see more time in right if Perez's slump lasts into the regular season, and Kerry Carpenter is also an option there on days when he's not serving as the DH.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Fades into reserve role
Perez is out of the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 of the ALDS versus the Mariners.
Since returning from the injured list in late May, Perez had served as a near-everyday player for the Tigers through the end of the regular season and during the wild-card round series victory over the Guardians, but he's moved into a reserve role for the ALDS. With Detroit welcoming Colt Keith back from a rib injury that kept him out of the wild-card round, Perez has found himself as the odd man out of the lineup for each of the first four games of the series with Seattle. Keith will once again serve as the Tigers' designated hitter Wednesday, which will result in Kerry Carpenter displacing Perez in right field.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Goes deep in win
Perez went 1-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Guardians.
Perez went deep in the first inning against Cleveland starter Parker Messick, giving him 13 long balls for the season. The 25-year-old outfielder came into the contest mired in a slump, as he was batting just .079 across his previous 10 games. The Tigers will need Perez to heat up over the weekend to increase their odds at winning the AL Central.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Keeps rolling Sunday
Perez went 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the White Sox.
Perez is now riding an eight-game hitting streak, and this was his third multi-hit performance during the hot stretch. The 25-year-old outfielder also tallied his 38th RBI of the season Sunday, giving him a new career high in the category. Perez has already established a new career best with 12 home runs this year, and his current .816 OPS would be a new high-water mark as well, giving him plenty of momentum for the fantasy stretch run.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Reaches three times, scores in loss
Perez went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in Friday's 7-5 loss to the White Sox.
Perez extended his hitting streak to six games, during which time he's batting .391 with a home run, three runs scored and five RBI. The 25-year-old outfielder seems to be blossoming in his second MLB season, and he's now sporting an .804 OPS across 81 games overall. Perez had a .683 OPS in 112 regular-season games as a rookie in 2024.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Collects three hits Tuesday
Perez went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in Tuesday's 12-5 loss to the Mets.
Perez has started the series against New York by going 4-for-9 with a double, a home run and five RBI across two games. The 25-year-old outfielder is emerging as an effective offensive performer in his second MLB season with a .266/.323/.479 slash line across 79 contests overall, and he should continue to see regular playing time for the Tigers.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Blasts off Monday
Perez went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's 10-8 loss to the Mets.
Perez launched a two-run home run in the third inning against New York southpaw Sean Manaea, his 12th long ball of the year, then added an RBI ground out in the eighth. The outfielder has already set a new career high in homers, and he needs just two more RBI to match the 37 RBI he tallied during the regular season as a rookie in 2024. Perez is most dangerous against lefties, as he's sporting a .979 OPS in those matchups this year, but he still has a respectable .719 OPS versus righties.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Smashes 11th home run in return
Perez went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's 10-8 loss to the Royals.
A day after beginning the game on the bench, Perez returned to the starting lineup Sunday and smashed his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning. The outfielder has been productive all month long, as he's batting .308 with four home runs, eight RBI and nine runs scored across 21 games in August. Perez also started Sunday's contest as the leadoff hitter for the first time this year, and sticking in the top spot could help his fantasy value hitting in front of the likes of Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Beginning on bench Saturday
Perez isn't in the starting lineup Saturday against Kansas City, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Perez will have at least a partial off day after starting in seven straight games and going 8-for-26 with a home run, two RBI, four runs and a stolen base over that span. The Tigers' outfield from left to right will consist of Riley Greene, Javier Baez and Kerry Carpenter on Saturday.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Homers, swipes base Monday
Perez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a stolen base in Monday's 10-0 win over the Astros.
Perez extended his hitting steak to four games, and he's now batting a cool .340 across 16 contests this month. The 25-year-old outfielder is up to 10 home runs and seven stolen bases for the season, with the homers representing a new career high. If Perez remains active on the bases, he could also reach double figures in both home runs and steals for the first time at the MLB level.

Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Stepping back into lineup
Perez (foot) will start in right field and bat third in Monday's game against the White Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Perez was removed from Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Angels after fouling a ball off his right foot, but he was fortunate to avoid any structural damage. The Tigers still held him out of the lineup for Sunday's 9-5 win while he contended with some bruising and swelling, but he's ready to go as Detroit kicks off a three-game set in Chicago on Monday. Perez has wielded a hot bat thus far in August, posting a 1.231 OPS through his first eight games of the month.

Perez will be on the bench for the first time since July 27 after fouling a ball off his right foot during Saturday's 7-4 loss. Manager A.J. Hinch said that the outfielder is already feeling better and could be available as a pinch hitter Sunday, per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. With Matt Vierling (oblique) landing on the injured list Sunday, Javier Baez will cover center field in the series finale.
