Marlins' JJ Bleday: Still scuffling in Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday has gone hitless across his last four games for Double-A Pensacola, dropping his season line to .196/.308/.321 with six homers, 26 RBI and 30 runs across 66 games.

The 23-year-old outfield prospect had finally negotiated his average above the Mendoza line when he hit yet another slump -- this one an 0-for-14 stretch, though at least he's drawn three walks in those four games. Bleday's 14 percent walk rate is the silver lining on this dark cloud of a season, as his much-touted power stroke has been almost entirely absent. The No. 4 overall pick from the 2019 draft, Bleday certainly has not lived up to his billing after leading the NCAA in homers in his final season at Vanderbilt. With his foundation of pedigree and plate discipline, Bleday isn't a lost cause, but his stock is certainly down. Enterprising dynasty-league managers with an appetite for risk might want to consider making a lowball trade offer.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Enjoys power surge at Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday was named the Double-A South Player of the Week on Monday after going 7-for-22 with two home runs, two doubles, two walks, five RBI and four runs over a six-game stretch from May 31 to June 6.

Even after the big week, Bleday's slash line at Double-A Pensacola sits at .178/.302/.327 for the season. The 23-year-old hasn't exactly hit the ground running in 2021, but he's at least kept his strikeout rate at a manageable 26.2 percent rate while walking in 15.1 percent of his plate appearances. If Bleday can maintain those rates while continuing to hit for power like he did this past week, it's not out of the question for him to earn a promotion to Triple-A Jacksonville by season's end.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Might begin year at Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday could open the season at Triple-A Jacksonville, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports.

The Marlins have yet to make any decisions about where to station the team's top prospects once the minor-league season begins, but Bleday's impressive showing in spring training has apparently carried over to the alternate training site. The 23-year-old only has 38 games at High-A Jupiter on his resume, but if Miami does send him to Jacksonville to begin the season, Bleday would be that much closer to making his big-league debut in 2021.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Could debut this summer
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday has impressed the Marlins with his maturity so far in camp, and the team hasn't ruled out the 23-year-old making his big-league debut later in the season, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of The Miami Herald reports.

The organization's No. 2 fantasy prospect homered in Miami's first game this spring before showing off his arm in right field on a double play Tuesday. Bleday will likely begin the season at Double-A Pensacola, but if he looks good at the plate in the high minors and the Marlins aren't in playoff contention, they could trade Corey Dickerson to open up a corner outfield spot for the youngster.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Earns camp invite
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday was invited to the Marlins' big-league spring training Monday.

The Marlins gave Bleday an aggressive assignment in 2019 after selecting him fourth overall, sending him straight to High-A. He held his own with a 107 wRC+ in 38 games, but the canceled minor-league season last year prevented him from following that up. The team was reportedly quite pleased with his performance at the alternate site, so it's possible another aggressive assignment is coming, though it would be a surprise to see him given serious consideration for an Opening Day roster spot.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Invited to summer camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday is part of the Marlins' 60-man player pool, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.

As one of the Marlins' top prospects, Bleday was a cinch to be invited to summer camp. He has never played above High-A, but is on the relative fast track to the majors. It's unlikely that Bleday sees much, if any, big-league action in 2020, but he could become a staple in a corner outfield spot in 2021 or 2022.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Heads to minors camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Marlins reassigned Bleday to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 first-year player draft will presumably open his first full season in the minors at High-A Jupiter, where he reported last summer shortly after signing with the Marlins. After showcasing impressive power in his final season of college at Vanderbilt, Bleday turned in a meager .121 ISO over 151 plate appearances in the Florida State League in 2019.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Joining big-league camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday will join the Marlins' big-league camp this spring.

The fourth-overall pick in the 2019 draft, Bleday spent the entirety of his first professional campaign with High-A Jupiter, hitting .257/.311/.379. He won't break camp with the team and is unlikely to make his big-league debut this year, but he has a chance to move up quickly as a college draftee with an advanced feel for the zone.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Hits first pro homer
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run for High-A Jupiter on Monday.

The fourth overall pick in this year's draft has had little difficulty adjusting to pro ball despite an aggressive assignment to the Florida State League -- Bleday's gone 4-for-13 in his first three games for Jupiter, with Monday's homer being his first. The 21-year-old will likely stay at High-A for the rest of the season unless he completely dominates, but a 2020 or early 2021 big-league debut is very much on the table.

Marlins' JJ Bleday: Opening at High-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday will make his professional debut with High-A Jupiter on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The fourth overall pick in this year's draft, Bleday has the potential to be a power bat in the middle of a big-league order. Skipping short-season ball and Low-A ball entirely indicates that the Marlins hope to have him on the fast track to the big leagues. Given how many levels he's jumping over, some brief initial struggles wouldn't come as too much of a surprise and shouldn't severely damage his prospect profile.

Marlins' J.J. Bleday: Talks set to begin with Marlins
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Bleday was scheduled to talk with the Marlins by phone Thursday night as contract talks begin in earnest, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. "Everything has been cordial," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Thursday. "We're hopeful we can work through it quickly, and get him out playing."

The fourth overall pick in the 2019 draft has been busy helping Vanderbilt win the College World Series, but with his collegiate career ending on the highest possible note, look for Bleday to put pen to paper and get started as a professional. The organization may elect to have him get his feet wet in rookie ball for a few games, but his advanced approach at the plate and prodigious power could put him in High-A before the season is over.
