James Mitchell, TE, Virginia Tech
NFL Draft analysis for James Mitchell, TE, Virginia Tech
Draft Scouting Report:
Rating: 71.44 (Chance to start)
Pro Comparison: Dwayne Allen
Strengths:
Long-strider who needs time to get up to speed, but he had four touchdown grabs in 2020. Willing blocker who can sustain blocks in the run game. Also shows a willingness to combo block and do it well, even pancaking unprepared linebackers. Displays toughness with the ball in his hands with legit YAC skills due to his ability to run through downfield arm tackles. Seems to find another gear in the open field with ball in hands; he'll run away from defenders once he gets going, and he's incredibly tough to bring down. One of the best blocking tight ends in the class.
Weaknesses:
Season-ending surgery after two games into the 2021 season, and he's not consistent in contested catch situations. Doesn't run a variety of routes -- mostly of the short/intermediate variety, and doesn't consistently put pressure on defensive backs with seam routes. Not particularly urgent in his movements and has more of a plodding running style.
Accolades:
- 2020: All-ACC second team (PFF)
- 47 rec for 765 yards between 2019 and 2020 (missed most of 2021 season with injury)
