Does hand size matter? How that question took over the combine
Taking a look at the storyline that's dominated the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine.
On Thursday afternoon, I finally understood why I needed a ruler in my life. How else would I be able to tell if my hands were big enough to adequately manipulate a football?
You gotta hand it to the 2016 NFL combine. It's not even Friday and the annual event has already taken over headlines thanks to one specific question: Does the hand size of a quarterback actually matter?

First, to get to the beginning of this story, we need to backtrack to Wednesday, when a report about Jared Goff's allegedly tiny hands emerged. This is what sparked the movement.
One point of curiosity for coaches/scouts entering combine week: how does Jared Goff measure? Smallest of top QBs, hands supposedly tiny.

While it would've been an easy narrative to dismiss as a typical offseason story, Hue Jackson made sure the story persisted.
Jackson, the head coach of the Browns, the team that could decided to draft Goff with the second-overall pick, gave his thoughts on the matter. And it turns out even he thinks the size of a quarterback's hands is important. And if Jackson thinks it's important, then it is important, namely because his opinion actually matters and will shape how the draft unfolds in April.
Hue Jackson HATES small hands on his QB, interesting tidbit with Goff's hands coming in small today

Sure enough, Goff measured in at nine inches.
Jared Goff, Christian Hackenberg: Hands measured 9 in. at NFL combine. Of 21 1st-rd QB since 2008, only Ryan Tannehill had hands that small.

Goff wasn't really pleased.
Jared Goff to the podium, says he thought he had big hands his whole life until yesterday

The Internet, however, was pleased.
I bought a ruler. Time to start measuring @nflnetwork hand sizes. #NFLCombine pic.twitter.com/sGytY1YQQl

QB hand size is important but does the hand have HEART

So do teams other than the Browns actually care that Goff's hands were measured at nine inches? Or, again, is this just the product of the offseason?
Well, it turns out coaches and executives do actually care.

The Falcons care.
"We're big on hand size," Dimitroff said

So do the 49ers, a team that's been connected with Goff in the lead up to the draft. Goff grew up a 49ers fan, and the team is currently dealing with a messy situation involving Colin Kaepernick.
#49ers Chip Kelly on importance of QB hand size: “Huge. You better have big hands. ... You better have a big paw to manipulate the football"
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) February 25, 2016
So what about a QB with 9-inch hands? Chip Kelly: They’re measureables. They’re guidelines. They’re not like ‘He has 9-inch hands. He’s out'
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) February 25, 2016
The championship Broncos also agree about the importance of hand size. Heck, John Elway even measured his hands.
#Broncos GM John Elway said he measured his hand 3 months ago to compare it with QB prospects: 10 1/8. "Hand size is important,'' he said.
— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) February 25, 2016
Wait, 10 and one-eighth inches? "Wooo!"
Elway casually drops that his hand size was 10 1/8. Someone in the crowd yells: "Woo!" Peak Combine has arrived.

Apparently, back in the day, the Patriots cared when they drafted someone named Tom Brady.
I know Twitter likes to make fun of the hand size thing for QBs, but a LOT of smart football people put stock in it. Pats did with Brady.

But here come the dissenters.
Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin calling QB hand size a "useless measurement," says team doesn't have minimum threshold
— Steve Palazzolo (@PFF_Steve) February 25, 2016
Included in that group: Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, who drafted Teddy nine-and-one-fourth-inches Bridgewater.
"A guy could have tiny Burger King hands, and -- we'll track him -- if he doesn't fumble, who cares?" Spielman said, per The Monday Morning Quarterback.
So, does Goff fumble? The short answer is yes. The long answer is that he's improved substantially in that category. And Goff certainly sounds like he's more than capable of (dare I say) "handling" the heightened scrutiny.
Asked Cal QB Jared Goff about 23 career fumbles, he asked me:
— Eric Edholm (@Eric_Edholm) February 25, 2016
"How many did I have this year?"
4, I think.
"That's better, right?"
But the best story to come out of this size obsession has nothing to do with Goff. It has everything to do with Brandon Allen and his attempt to make his hands bigger via massage therapy.
Brandon Allen increased his hand size by 3/8 of an inch since Senior Bowl. By massage therapy. A thing that really happened.

Now that is peak combine.
