Former 10th overall draft pick WR Mike Williams headed for CFL
Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams, who was selected 10th overall by the Lions in the 2005 NFL Draft, has been signed by the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
During his five-year NFL career, wide receiver Mike Williams spent time with two teams located near Canada. Now he'll actually be playing there. The CFL's Toronto Argonauts announced that they've signed Williams, who spent five years in the NFL, including two seasons each with Seattle and Detroit.
The Lions made Williams the 10th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, back when former Detroit general manager Matt Millen was stocking up on first-round wide receivers. Before Williams, the Lions had selected Charles Rogers with the second overall pick in 2003 and Roy Williams with the seventh overall pick in 2004.
After only catching 37 passes in two seasons with the Lions, Detroit traded Williams to the Raiders in 2007. Less than halfway through the season, Williams was cut by the Raiders and eventually signed by the Titans.
The former USC star was out of the NFL in 2008 and 2009 before being given a shot in Seattle by old college coach Pete Carroll. Williams caught 65 passes for the Seahawks in 2010, which ranked first on the team and led to Williams finishing second to Michael Vick in Comeback Player of the Year voting.
The Seahawks cut the injury-plagued Williams after the 2011 season.
The 29-year-old has a total of 127 catches for 1,526 yards and five touchdowns in his NFL career.
