Last week the Panthers made a move everyone saw coming, cutting cornerback Chris Gamble in order to get underneath the salary cap. On Monday, Gamble made a move no one saw coming, when he decided to retire.

Gamble's agent Carl Poston told Josina Anderson of ESPN that, even though "a number of teams have expressed interest" in signing Gamble, the cornerback is hanging up his spikes.

"A number of teams have expressed interest in Chris Gamble. However, Chris informed me last night that he wants to retire," Postin said. "Even though he still loves football, he told me that he's decided to focus on life after football. Chris has been a class act. I have represented him for nine years, ever since he came out of Ohio State. He's been an ideal client and he was one of the best corners in game. He's doing it the right way.

"He has taken care of his money and his investments to retire successfully, and now I wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Gamble is just 30 years old, so it's kind of stunning to see him just walk away from the game. He certainly could've latched on with another team, even though he didn't have a spectacular 2012 season.

He would've faced some competition on the market given the number of cornerbacks out there, but certainly would've been an attractive second-tier option for a team with a weak secondary.

Instead, the former Ohio State standout will leave the game having been a Panther for life; Carolina selected him in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft and he played nine seasons in Charlotte.

Gamble is the Panthers' all-time franchise leader in interceptions and passes defended.
