The Rays recalled Bard from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.
He'll join the 26-man active roster as a replacement for fifth starter Ryan Yarbrough, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The Rays will need to clear room on the roster this weekend in Minnesota, when Shane Baz (elbow) is scheduled to come off the 60-day injured list and take over Yarbrough's rotation spot. As a result, Bard may be around with the big club for just a few days as an additional bullpen arm.
