Ross (shoulder) was non-tendered by the Padres on Friday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Non-tendering Ross is a shocker from the Padres, who went from starting him on Opening Day to releasing him to free agency in the span of 2016. Between 2013 and 2015, Ross threw an average of 172 innings with a 3.07 ERA and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings, but the shoulder woes that cost him nearly his entire 2016 season apparently made him not worth the $9 million price tag approximated by A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com. Ross underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in October and is still recovering, but he is nearly certain to be picked up by a team needing rotation depth and accepting of his injury risk.
