Engel (shoulder) agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the White Sox on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Engel has yet to make his Cactus League while he builds back up from the cleanup procedure for his left shoulder that he required early in the offseason, but that won't deter the White Sox from keeping him in the fold for 2022. When healthy, Engel likely profiles as Chicago's fourth outfielder thanks to the solid defense he offers at all three spots, though he's shown some unexpected growth as a hitter over the past two seasons. Across 233 plate appearances since the start of the 2020 campaign, Engel has slashed .270/.335/.488 with 10 home runs and an 8-for-9 success rate on stolen-base attempts.
