  • Zach Agnos RP | COL

Rockies' Zach Agnos: Fares well as opener

Agnos didn't factor into the decision against Atlanta on Saturday, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk in 2.2 relief innings. He struck out one.

The Rockies went with a bullpen game, and Agnos opened the contest as well as Colorado could have hoped. It was the right-hander's third starting assignment of the year, and he's been effective with a 1.69 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 6:5 K:BB in 10.2 innings out of the rotation versus a 6.09 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 46:22 K:BB across 68 innings from the bullpen. He's worked at least five innings just one time this season and has yet to reach the 80-pitch marker, so Agnos may struggle for streaming appeal if he draws another start.

  • Louie Varland RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Louis Varland: Secures 31st save

Varland picked up the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over Seattle, striking out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning.

The Blue Jays rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score four runs across the fifth and sixth innings, prompting the call for Varland to close things out in the ninth. The right-hander needed 12 pitches (eight strikes) to secure the save, striking out Taylor Ward in the process. Varland has logged a save in seven of his last eight outings and is up to 31 saves on the year, which is tied with David Bednar for fifth-most in the majors. Varland sports a 1.18 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 84:18 K:BB over 68.2 innings this season.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Throws clean inning in return

Whitlock struck out one over a scoreless inning and picked up a hold in Saturday's 6-0 win over the Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader.

Whitlock was reinstated from the injured list Saturday and put to work immediately in the eighth inning of a close game. The Red Sox led 2-0 at the time, which fits his role as a setup reliever for closer Aroldis Chapman, and picked up his 22nd hold. It turns out the closer wasn't needed as Boston scored four times in the top of the ninth. Whitlock entered the game with a 1.21 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 32:1 K:BB over his previous 31 outings (29.2 innings).

  • Abner Uribe RP | MIL

Brewers' Abner Uribe: Expected back Monday

Uribe (forearm) is expected to return from the injured list before Monday's game against the Cubs, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Out since Aug. 14 with a strained forearm, Uribe was cleared to begin a rehab assignment at High-A Wisconsin on Tuesday and threw two scoreless innings while walking one batter and striking out three across two appearances. Once activated, he'll reclaim his role as Milwaukee's top setup man in front of closer Trevor Megill.

  • Justin Topa RP | NYY

Yankees' Justin Topa: Jettisoned from 40-man

The Yankees designated Topa for assignment Saturday.

Topa gave up one unearned run in two innings during his lone appearance with the Yankees, and he'll now cede his spot on the active roster to Max Fried (elbow), who returned from the injured list Saturday. Topa is likely to clear waivers after posting a 7.29 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in 21 major-league innings this season.

  • Alec Gamboa RP | BOS

Red Sox's Alec Gamboa: Opening nightcap

Gamboa will serve as the opening pitcher during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Gamboa has fired 7.2 shutout innings since returning to the majors Aug. 12, bringing his ERA down to just 1.31 through 20.2 MLB frames on the year. He'll now receive his second opening assignment of the season and could remain in the game for multiple innings before turning the game over to Boston's bullpen.

  • Devin Williams RP | NYM

    Mets' Devin Williams: Resumes throwing

Williams (shoulder) began playing catch Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

It's the first time Williams has done any sort of throwing since he landed on the injured list Aug. 10 with a strained right shoulder. He still has several more hurdles to clear before he can return from the injured list, but the Mets expect the 31-year-old closer to return to the bullpen sometime in September. Until then, Kodai Senga figures to continue receiving the bulk of the save opportunities.

  • Derek Law RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Derek Law: Selected from Reno

The Diamondbacks selected Law's contract from Triple-A Reno on Saturday.

Law returned to action at Reno on Aug. 12 and has since given up five hits and no walks while striking out five batters in 6.1 shutout innings. The 35-year-old will now return to the majors for the first time since 2024 to provide extra depth to Arizona's bullpen ahead of its doubleheader against the Giants. Kohl Drake was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Matt Brash RP | SEA

Mariners' Matt Brash: Completes bullpen session Saturday

Brash (lat) threw a bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled to throw another one in Boston early next week, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Brash threw 15-to-20 pitches in his latest mound session as he continues his recovery from a right lat strain. The hard-throwing setup man has missed extended time with no indication that he has faced live hitters. Given that, a return Tuesday when rosters expand seems unlikely.

  • Zach Agnos RP | COL

    Rockies' Zach Agnos: Starting Saturday

Agnos will start Saturday's game against Atlanta.

Agnos will be filling in for Ryan Feltner, who was scratched from his start due to an illness. Agnos has logged a 5.68 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 76 innings with the Rockies this season and hasn't thrown more than three innings in an appearance since May, so his outing Saturday is likely to be relatively brief.
