  • Johnson caught his only target for a 14-yard gain during Sunday's 27-20 win against the Colts. The rookie wideout from Texas was one of the many beneficiaries to Gardner Minshew's uber-efficient afternoon, as he was among 10 Jaguars players to catch at least one pass while Minshew completed 19-of-20 attempts. Johnson saw under 20 percent of the offensive snaps in his debut, as Keelan Cole, DJ Chark and fellow rookie Laviska Shenault were the only Jaguars receivers to attract more than one target. Heading into a Week 2 matchup against the Titans, Johnson is expected to remain a depth wide receiver option for the so far run-heavy Jaguars offense.

  • Johnson was the star of Saturday's scrimmage and appears to have locked down a spot on the regular-season roster, according to Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL Jacksonville. Johnson got most of his work with the backups but also caught a pass from Minshew, taking advantage of the opportunity with both Dede Westbrook (shoulder) and Laviska Shenault (undisclosed) held out of the scrimmage. It won't be easy for the rookie fifth-round pick to earn snaps amidst a receiver group that also has DJ Chark, Chris Conley and Keelan Cole, but it does seem like Johnson will be part of the team, at the very least. Given the expectation of a rebuilding season, there's a good chance the Jags will want to see more from Shenault and Johnson before the year is done.

  • Johnson signed his rookie contract with the Jaguars on Thursday, John Oehser of the team's official site reports. A rookie fifth-round pick, Johnson's lanky frame (6-foot-6, 222 pounds) immediately sets him apart in Jacksonville's receiver room. Coming off a productive four years at Texas, in which he showed uncommon finesse for a wideout of his size, Johnson could be utilized as unique a depth weapon as a rookie if he's able to adjust to the NFL's level of physicality. The 22-year-old could even possess limited upside in the red zone.

  • The Jaguars selected Johnson in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, 165th overall. Johnson (6-foot-6, 222) is very tall -- perhaps too tall given how skinny he is. But Johnson is uncommonly graceful for such a tall receiver, affording him more coordination and precision in his movements than you might assume at a glance. So long as his lanky frame can avoid issues against the press, Johnson should be able to offer some useful reps. He should be a better version of Brandon Coleman at worst. Johnson was productive for each of his four years at Texas, eventually accumulating 2,624 yards and 15 touchdowns in 42 games.
