Penguins' Ty Smith: Elevated from AHL

Smith was called up from the minors Wednesday.

Smith's promotion could be an indication that Chad Ruhwedel (upper body) will be unavailable for at least Wednesday's clash with Detroit, if not longer. Even with a spot on the NHL roster, Smith may not be able to secure minutes over Mark Friedman, who figures to have the inside track for a slot on the blue line.
