2014 Ryder Cup: Tom Watson's curious decision
Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed destroyed the European duo they faced on Friday, and they were rewarded with a seat on the bench in the afternoon.

The decision to bench Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed for the Friday afternoon alternate shot might be even more curious than it initially seemed.
And it initially seemed very curious.
According to Weiunderpar.com, Jordan Spieth thought he was going back out in the afternoon after joining with Reed to beat Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher 5 and 4 in the four-ball matches.
"I 100 percent assumed we were going back out, and because what Captain Tom said was, 'We’ll have our other two afternoon pairings based on how the mornings going,'" said Spieth.
"We win 5 and 4 and figure we’re going to play alternate shot. So I went and asked, 'Should we go back and get ready, we’re wondering if we’re going off.' He said, 'We’re going to sit you guys. It was a decision we made. It was a tough call, coming down to you guys, and Jimmy, Rickie, and Phil and Keegan, but we’re going rest you guys today.'"
"So, hopefully we’ll play both matches tomorrow."
Watson went on to say that he knew the two were upset.
"I’m so proud of them," said Watson in a TV interview. "They were very upset with me for not playing them this afternoon. I said, 'I know you’re going to be mad at me, but you’ll be playing tomorrow for sure.'"
They should be after the whipping they handed out on Friday morning.
