Mariners pitcher Jon Garland threw six innings against the Cubs Thursday, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three. Both runs came off solo home runs, one by opposing pitcher Jeff Samardzija.

Garland has now allowed three earned runs in 12 innings this spring and could be in line for a rotation spot with the Mariners. His caused was helped when Erasmo Ramirez, also in competition for a spot in the rotation, came on and allowed four earned runs on six hits in two innings. Ramirez had only given up two earned runs in 12 innings entering play Thursday.

Garland can take advantage of his out clause beginning on Friday, so the Mariners should make a decision on him very soon.
