  • Nationals' DJ Herz: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Nationals optioned Herz to Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

Herz was one of seven players sent out of big-league camp in the Nationals' latest round of spring roster cuts. Acquired from the Cubs last July in the deal that sent Jeimer Candelario to Chicago, Herz settled at Double-A Harrisburg with his new organization and turned in a 2.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB in 35.1 innings. He'll get a new challenge at the Triple-A level to begin the 2024 campaign and could get a look with Washington at some point later in the season if he continues to excel with Rochester.

  • Nationals' DJ Herz: Gets spot on 40-man

The Nationals selected Herz to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Herz was acquired from the Cubs this past July as part of the Jeimer Candelario trade and is now protected from being plucked away from another organization in next month's Rule 5 Draft. The 22-year-old left-hander holds a career 3.64 ERA with a whopping 413 strikeouts in 281.2 total minor-league innings.

  • Nationals' DJ Herz: Part of Candelario return

Herz was traded from the Cubs to the Nationals on Monday along with Kevin Made in exchange for Jeimer Candelario, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Herz's value has taken a tumble since he got to Double-A last season, as his below-average command became a big issue. He is repeating Double-A this year, and he is still walking too many batters (14 percent), but his 3.97 ERA and 1.42 WHIP represent significant improvements on the 8.24 ERA and 1.80 WHIP he posted in 31.2 innings at Double-A in 2022. Herz projects best as a setup man or middle reliever, but the Nationals will likely keep trying to develop him as a starter.

  • Cubs' DJ Herz: Whiffs career-high 12

Herz struck out a dozen Dayton hitters over five innings in his start Wednesday for High-A South Bend, allowing no runs on a hit and a hit by pitch. He now has a 1.45 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 53:17 K:BB across 37.1 innings.

Herz has been nearly impossible to hit in the minors going back to last season, as he allowed a composite batting average of .157 last year and has been even better with a microscopic .120 average against him this year. The main caveat for the 21-year-old is that Wednesday marked the first time in 10 starts this season that he's finished five innings, so he's never had to go through a lineup three times. His 4.1 BB/9 is a bit concerning as well. All in all, while Herz still has the potential to become a big-league starter, there's a strong probability that he ends up in a relief role -- but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as he could be a shutdown lefty out of the pen.

  • Cubs' DJ Herz: Nice start at High-A

Herz struck out five and walked one in three scoreless innings in his season debut for High-A South Bend.

One of the Cubs' top pitching prospects, Herz also allowed just one hit in his season debut. If he can keep the walks in check, he could be a factor in the big-league rotation in 2023 or 2024. His premium stuff would also play up in relief.
