SS -- Rahim Moore was a second-round pick last year and Quinton Carter was a fourth-rounder, but Carter thoroughly outplayed Moore after supplanting him in the starting lineup last October. Carter played more decisively, but Moore has greater range and could have more upside.  That's why the Broncos spent the offseason talking up Moore, trying to build up his confidence after a rookie year defined by missteps and costly late hits.  The two split time on the first team at strong safety throughout the offseason next to veteran free safety Mike Adams, and that could continue this summer, with Moore being given given every chance to justify being the first safety chosen in last year's draft.

Slot WR -- The Broncos signed ex-Bengal Andre Caldwell in March, intending for him to fill this position, but added Brandon Stokley a month later to provide Peyton Manning a familiar face.  Stokley -- who was with the Broncos from 2007 until 2010's training camp -- has struggled with nagging injuries in recent years; his 2011 season ended on Oct. 4 when the Giants released him with an injury settlement after he hurt his quadriceps during a practice.  But he's the only Broncos wide receiver who's caught regular-season passes from Manning, having played together in Indianapolis from 2003-06. Stokley also knows the Broncos' offensive nomenclature; his last full season with the Broncos was in 2009 -- the first on the job for offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.  A recurrence of Stokley's injury troubles could tilt the scales toward Caldwell, but if the 36-year-old Stokley stays healthy, he has the edge.

DT -- New defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio wants bigger defensive tackles, so his first-teamers on the inside of his defensive line for much of the offseason were free-agent pickup Justin Bannan and 2011 practice-squad member Sealver Siliga, both of whom weigh more than 310 pounds. Kevin Vickerson also rotated onto the first unit; he added nearly 40 pounds to hit 324.  They're joined by Ty Warren, who stayed away during most of OTAs but reported in June after resolving a contract impasse; he checks in at 300 pounds and has the strongest resume', but hasn't played a regular-season snap in two years. Bannan appears to be the only set starter; beyond him, Bannan, Siliga, Vickerson and second-round rookie Derek Wolfe will grapple for playing time in the rotation.
