The Raiders have waived linebacker Rolando McClain. The former first-round pick out of Alabama fell well short of the expectations that he might be Oakland's version of Patrick Willis, and instead proved to be a mediocre player on some pretty bad teams whose bloated contract and off-field troubles made getting rid of him an easy decision.

McClain leaves the Raiders after three seasons, his best coming in 2011 when he registered 77 tackles, five sacks and 14 passes defended in 15 games. For his career, McClain has 173 tackles, 6 1/2 sacks and 20 passes defended.

Last month, the team reportedly gave McClain permission to seek a trade but there were no takers.

In January, McClain was arrested for the second time in just over a year for a window tint violation. He had previously been charged for allegedly pointing a gun at a man and firing off a round next to the man's head (the charges were later dropped).

Late last season, McClain was suspended two games for conduct detrimental to the team. At the time, coach Dennis Allen offered this explanation:

"I laid out exactly what the expectations are for him moving forward,” Allen said regarding McClain's return to the team. “Really, that's about it. We're moving on from there. Rolando's part of this team, and we're going to move on."

And now the Raiders are moving on without McClain, who was set to make $4 million in '13 and $5.8 million in '14. The 23-year-old will almost certainly clear waivers, and the real question is if any of the 31 other teams will be willing to take chance on him.
