With pick No. 169 in the NFL Draft, the Saints selected linebacker Ronald Powell from Florida.
The Saints have focused on defense with four of their first five picks with cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, linebacker Khairi Fortt, safety Vinnie Sunseri and now Powell. He could have the chance to earn his stripes as a reserve linebacker in New Orleans.
Powell was the No. 1 defensive end recruit in 2010, but he struggled to stay healthy at Florida. He sat out the 2012 season when he tore his left ACL twice. He started 8 of 11 games played in 2013, but he strained his left hamstring running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Powell will play on special teams and be a reserve for the Saints as a rookie.
