Inciarte was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Saturday and designated for assignment.

Inciarte is in the final year of a five-year, $30.5 million contract, but Atlanta will have to pay him the remainder of this year's $8 million salary whether or not he's part of the roster. The team evidently decided they'd rather pay him to not play than keep him around. It's hard to argue with that decision considering that his .592 OPS in limited action this season isn't much better than his .512 mark from last year, though it's notable that the 30-year-old isn't deemed worthy of a roster spot even on a squad that's already lost fellow outfielders Ronald Acuna (knee) and Marcell Ozuna (not injury related). That seemingly doesn't bode well for Inciarte's ability to find a spot on an active roster elsewhere.
