Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig earned the first accolades of his career Wednesday, as he was named the National League's Player of the Month for June. Manager Don Mattingly expressed little surprise to MLB.com that Puig would earn the award, after he hit .436 with a 1.180 OPS, seven home runs and 16 RBI in June.
"It would have been a surprise if he didn't," Mattingly told MLB.com. "It would have been a surprise if anybody was doing more than that. I'd like to see somebody do that."
Puig is the first National League player to win Player of the Month in his debut month. He was also, unsurprisingly, tabbed as the Rookie of the Month.
