Gipson-Long allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Friday. Gipson-Long kept the scoring down but didn't have dominant stuff Friday, throwing 52 of 89 pitches for strikes. He's maintained a 2.40 ERA through 15 innings over three starts while adding a 20:6 K:BB. He's tentatively due for one more start in 2023, which is expected to come at home versus the Royals.... Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Possible waiver wire pickups
Sawyer Gipson-Long is already 25, doesn't rank particularly high among Tigers prospects, and had only a 4.33 ERA between two minor-league stops this year. But he also had 11.4 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 between those stops, an outstanding ratio that suggested he may be more than just rotation filler. We now have two major-league starts to support the claim, the biggest being an 11-strikeout, two-hit effort Saturday at the Angels. It was short, spanning only five innings, but it was dominant, yielding 23 swinging strikes on just 82 pitches. Gipson-Long leaned mostly on his slider and changeup but showed a knack for mixing in his two-seamer and four-seamer at opportune moments, making up for their middling velocity. The long ball was his downfall in the minors and may prove to be in the majors as well, but given his matchups against the Athletics this week and the Royals the following week, perhaps we should focus on the upside. In leagues of 15 teams or more, Gipson-Long could be a godsend.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Strikes out 11 in no-decision
Gipson-Long allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out 11 over five innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Saturday. Gipson-Long gave up his first home run, a solo shot to Nolan Schanuel in the third inning, but it was an otherwise impressive second start for the rookie right-hander. Gipson-Long has allowed three runs over 10 innings while posting a 16:3 K:BB across his first two major-league outings. Assuming he's earned another start, he lines up for a favorable road outing in Oakland next week.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Gets second start
Gipson-Long is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Angels in Anaheim, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. As expected, Gipson-Long will stick around with the big club to make a second turn through the rotation after he limited the White Sox to two runs while striking out five over five innings en route to picking up a win in his MLB debut. Gipson-Long showcased swing-and-miss stuff during stops at Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo prior to getting called up last weekend, but his lack of prospect pedigree and minimal MLB experience still make him a risky streaming option against the Angels.... Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Grabs win in debut
Gipson-Long (1-0) earned the win in his big-league debut Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings in the Tigers' 3-2 victory over the White Sox. He struck out five. The 25-year-old Gipson-Long showcased advanced control in his debut, throwing 50 of his 73 pitches for strikes without allowing a walk. Gipson-Long had been struggling a bit at Triple-A Toledo prior to his call-up, pitching to a 5.45 ERA across 34.2 innings with the affiliate following his mid-July promotion from Double-A Erie. After his strong showing Sunday, however, Gipson-Long could get an extended look in the Detroit rotation in September with Matt Manning (foot) set to miss the rest of the season.... See More ...
