Does Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez suck? Panthers receiver Steve Smith thinks he does. (USATSI)

It's been a rough offseason for New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

First, Tim Tebow's quarterback coach called Sanchez 'fragile-minded.' Then the Jets drafted Geno Smith with their second round pick in April's NFL Draft and a report quickly surfaced that said the team was thinking about cutting Sanchez. Then Sanchez started wearing headbands to practice and now we have Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith, who offered a pretty scathing one sentence assessment of Sanchez's talents while co-hosting a radio show in Charlotte on Wednesday.

"He sucks. I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich," Smith said on WFNZ 610-AM via CBS-New York

According to the radio station's Twitter page, the topic of Sanchez came up when Smith and his co-hosts began debating a list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, a list written by our very own Will Brinson. Brinson had Sanchez ranked 30th out of 32 quarterbacks, which Smith probably thinks is two spots too high.

Word of Smith's comments reached Sanchez on Thursday, however, Sanchez wisely decided not to get into a war of words with a guy who once punched his own teammate during practice.

"I wish him and his team a healthy, successful season," Sanchez said in response to Smith's comments, according to USA Today's Mike Garafolo.

If you didn't have Dec. 15 circled on your calendar before you might want too now.

If Sanchez can win the Jets starting quarterback job -- and then hold on to it for 14 weeks, he could be New York's starter when the Jets travel to Carolina in Week 15.
