Astros' Cooper Hummel: Booted off roster

The Astros designated Hummel for assignment Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Cam Smith, whose contract was selected ahead of Thursday's season opener versus the Mets. Hummel will now go through the waiver process and could draw interest from a team in need of a player with positional versatility.
