Barrero (undisclosed) is playing center field and batting seventh in Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The 23-year-old hasn't played since Tuesday, but he returns to make his first career start in the outfield. Barrero has hit .190 in 21 at-bats this season and draws a tough matchup in Clayton Kershaw on Sunday.
Barrero won't start Sunday against St. Louis, as he's still sore after exiting Saturday's game following a collision with teammate Tyler Naquin, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. The exact nature and severity of Barrero's injury is unclear, but he's yet to be diagnosed with anything other than soreness. Eugenio Suarez starts at shortstop in his absence.
Barrero was recalled by the Reds on Friday. Barrero takes the spot of Kyle Farmer, who was placed on the paternity list. He'll fill in for Farmer at shortstop for Friday's game against the Cardinals and may start there Saturday and Sunday as well, but it's not clear whether or not he'll have a roster spot once Farmer returns.
The Reds optioned Barrero to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday and assigned him to the taxi squad, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. The infield prospect has appeared in six games and gone 2-for-12 with a double since being called up Aug. 16. Barrero's roster spot was needed for the versatile Asdrubal Cabrera, who joined the Reds on Saturday after being claimed off waivers.
Barrero went 2-for-3 with a double in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs. Barrero struggled in his first cup of coffee in the big leagues last year at age 22. He responded by slashing .303/.378/.532 with 17 homers and 15 steals in 80 games between Double-A and Triple-A to open 2021, earning another look in Cincinnati. Barrero is a top prospect in the organization, and his performance Wednesday was a bright spot for the Reds -- he also turned a pair of double plays alongside Jonathan India. However, Kyle Farmer has emerged as a viable major-league shortstop this season and Barrero has no professional outfield experience, so there does not appear to be a path to regular at-bats at the moment.
