Goodwin was released by the Suns on Monday and will become a free agent, Shams Charania of The Vertical reports.

In a surprising move, the Suns will part ways with the 22-year-old, who started 13 games last season following injuries to both Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight. The rationale behind the move is unclear, but in the absence of Goodwin, veteran Leandre Barbosa and rookie Tyler Ulis could each see slight increases in minutes off the bench. Through three NBA seasons, Goodwin holds modest career averages of 6.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 14.5 minutes per game, but he's still considered a relatively high-upside player and figures to draw considerable interest on the free agent market. All things considered, this may be in Goodwin's best interest in the long-term, as he'll likely have a clearer path to playing time wherever he lands.
