Cardinals third baseman David Freese was left out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Reds but it had nothing to do with a health issue.

Freese, who returned from a back injury Monday, is just 1 for 12 (.083) in his career against Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo. Matt Carpenter has had better success against Arroyo (3 for 14) so he received the nod at the hot corner.

Freese told MLB.com that his back felt fine after going 0 for 3 in his season debut. He was able to participate in fielding work and batting practice Tuesday.
