Angels' Nate Smith: Outrighted to Triple-A
Smith (shoulder) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
The lefty will remain in the Angels' organization after being designated for assignment earlier in the week. Smith will miss the entire 2018 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He was limited to just four total appearances in the minors last year.

Angels' Nate Smith: Will miss 2018 season
Smith will miss the entire 2018 season after undergoing shoulder surgery this week, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
Smith underwent anterior capsule surgery in September as well, after dealing with forearm issues throughout the course of the 2017 campaign. A timeline for his recovery is expected to take 12-14 months, so he should be able to head into the 2019 season at full health, barring any setbacks.

Smith (forearm) has made four rehab starts in the Rookie-level AZL and is expected to return to Triple-A Salt Lake in the near future, Bill Mitchell of Baseball America reports.
The 25-year-old had an outside chance at the Angels' Opening Day roster in spring training, but Smith has been dealing with a forearm strain all season and has made only one appearance for Salt Lake.

Angels' Nate Smith: Possible option in fifth starter race
While a start in Triple-A Salt Lake is most likely, Smith has an outside chance of making the 25-man roster as the team's fifth starter, The Orange County Register reports.
Smith made his Cactus League debut Monday, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out two batters. The battle for the Angels' fifth starter spot will likely come down to Jesse Chavez and Bud Norris, but they will consider younger options as well. Smith had a down year with Triple-A Salt Lake last season, finishing with a 4.61 ERA and an identical 4.61 FIP in 26 starts. The Angels will likely send him down to Triple-A so he can prove himself there before bringing him up for a rotation spot.

Angels' Nate Smith: Added to 40-man roster
Smith was added to the Angels' 40-man roster Friday.
The lefty developed a bout of elbow soreness late in the season but it seems it was a relatively minor issue, as the Angels used a 40-man spot to protect Smith from the Rule 5 draft. Smith went 8-9 with a 4.61 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 122:44 K:BB in 150.1 innings with Triple-A Salt Lake in 2016.

Angels' Nate Smith: Will have elbow examined
Smith is nursing a sore left elbow and will be evaluated by doctors Sunday, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Smith, one of the top pitching prospects in a weak Angels farm system, exited his start Saturday at Triple-A Salt Lake with the injury. The organization is just labeling his injury as soreness for now, but given how little time is left in the season, it's possible Smith will be shut down for good just as a precaution. The Angels should know more about the severity of Smith's injury later in the week.

Angels' Nate Smith: Reassigned to minor league camp
Smith has been reassigned to minor league camp.
This is not much of a surprise after the lefty posted a 7.75 ERA over 36 innings pitched at the Triple-A level last season. The 24-year-old will start the season in the minor leagues and, if he performs well, could potentially receive a callup at some point during the season.
