The Carolina Panthers are planning to keep Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.
The Panthers already are $10 million dollars north of the projected salary cap of $122 million. Williams has a cap figure of $8.2 million in 2013, and the team signed Stewart last season to a five-year, $36.5 million contract. Both of those contracts could be reworked if needed, depending on what moves the Panthers make in free agency.
“Can we keep both of them? Again, decisions have to be made," general manager Dave Gettleman said this week at the NFL combine, according to the paper. "I don't see why not.”
Stewart is coming off arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle in January after missing seven games in 2012. Williams stepped in and rushed for 737 yards and five touchdowns, including a 210-yard effort in a Week-17 win over the Saints.
The Panthers also brought on bruising back Mike Tolbert before last season, agreeing to a four-year, $10 million deal. Tolbert led the backs with seven rushing touchdowns and 27 catches.
Williams, 29, will likely start the season as Stewart's backup, as he did last year.
