Falcons' Derrick Shelby: Placed on IR
Shelby (groin) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Will McFadden of the Falcons' official site reports.
Shelby started in three games for Atlanta in 2018 but missed time earlier this season with a groin injury. The Utah product is the fourth defensive starter to be placed on injured reserve, joining Keanu Neal (knee), Ricardo Allen (Achilles) and Deion Jones (foot) -- although Jones was activated prior to playing the Cowboys. Shelby didn't carry an injury designation prior to facing the Cowboys in Week 11, but the injury seems to have lingered and will force him to miss the remainder of the season.

Falcons' Derrick Shelby: Cleared to face Cowboys
Shelby (groin) doesn't carry an injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Cowboys, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Shelby didn't practice Wednesday but was able to practice in a limited capacity Thursday and Friday. The Utah product has played in each of the Falcons' last three games after missing the previous four. In last week's contest against the Browns, Shelby logged four tackles (three solo) over 25 defensive snaps.

Shelby was able to suit up during Atlanta's loss to the Browns in Week 10 despite being listed as questionable due to a groin issue, and still appears to be managing his recovery. It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will play against the Cowboys on Sunday. If Shelby is unable to go, Steven Means will serve as the primary backup to Vic Beasley.

Shelby had just been added to the injury report Friday, but it appears his groin issue wasn't overly serious. The 29-year-old end will look to help the Falcons contain mobile rookie signal-caller Baker Mayfield, as well as a Browns rushing attack that has been effective since Nick Chubb was given the reins of the No. 1 running back job.

Shelby (groin) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
The veteran defensive end sustained this lingering groin injury during a Week 2 win over Carolina and has been held out of the lineup for the Falcons' past four games. Shelby being able to partake in practice is not necessarily a sign that he will be activated for a Week 7 tilt against the Giants, as he has been able to participate in walk-throughs and individual drills for three weeks now without yet being able to return for full-speed game action. His presence on the field, even on a restricted snap count, would be beneficial in trying to slow down electrifying rookie running back Saquon Barkley.

Shelby (groin) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Shelby was able to put in limited work at practice this week, but he still was not deemed healthy enough to play this weekend. This is Shelby's fourth straight absence while he nurses a groin injury, and he will continue to be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

The veteran defensive end was a limited practice participant for each of the team's practice sessions last week, but ultimately was unable play against Pittsburgh in Week 5. Shelby has been forced to sit out Atlanta's past three games, however, the front seven has only fared slightly worse in his absence. The Falcons have allowed 124 rushing yards per game since Shelby first went inactive in Week 3, compared to 117 yards per game in two outings when he was healthy.

Shelby is close to returning from a groin injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 2, but the defensive end wasn't quite ready for a Week 5 appearance. He'll have a solid chance to see the field Week 6 against the Buccaneers, but Brooks Reed and Steven Means could earn additional snaps at defensive end Sunday behind Vic Beasley and Takkarist McKinley.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said Monday that he is hopeful Shelby (groin) will be able to play Sunday against the Steelers, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Shelby has missed each of the Falcons' past two games as he continues to work his way back from injury. The veteran defense end was deemed inactive for all three of the team's practices last week, but has a chance of returning in time for a must-win road game against the Steelers and an offensive line that has held opponents to 1.6 sacks per game since the start of the 2017 season (NFL-best is 1.2 sacks allowed per game during that span).

Shelby (groin) was cleared for walkthroughs but did not participate in individual drills during Thursday's practice, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
After being held out last Sunday against the Saints, Shelby carries a questionable designation for a Week 4 showdown versus Cincinnati. The Falcons are thin at defensive end with Takk McKinley (groin) also battling injury, so it would be tremendously beneficial to get Shelby in the lineup against a Bengals offensive line that has excelled in pass protection in the early going.

Shelby continues to nurse a groin injury suffered during Atlanta's Week 2 victory over the Panthers. The depth defensive end's lack of availability is no surprise, considering that Shelby has yet to fully return to practice. With Takkarist McKinley (groin) already on the shelf for Week 3, Shelby's absence leads to Atlanta having to face New Orleans without the team's starting left defensive end and backup right defensive end. Brooks Reed is in line to start in place of McKinley, while Steven Means will see playing time as Vic Beasley's substitute.

Falcons' Derrick Shelby: Re-signs with Falcons
Shelby agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with Atlanta on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Shelby was cut by the Falcons in early March, but he now returns to the team on restructured terms. After recording 6.5 sacks and two interceptions between 2014 and 2015 with Miami, Shelby has tallied just one sack with zero forced turnovers during his first two years as a Falcon. The return of Shelby became a necessity with the team thinning out along the defensive line, having seen reigning team sack-leader Adrian Clayborn dart to New England in free agency.
