Fantasy Special: Mock auction
Auction drafts present many challenges. Should you spend on top running backs, or wait for bargains later in the draft? Our Mock Auction gives you an idea how to manage your dollars and build your roster. Our 12 experts constructed balanced teams while competing for elite players like Ricky Williams.
SportsLine.com recently gathered a dozen of the top Fantasy and NFL experts on staff to participate in a mock auction draft that will be played out in a league during the season. To challenge the knowledge of our experts, each owner was given 100 auction dollars to draft a roster of 16 players.
The key scoring and rules for this auction were as follows: You must start one quarterback, two running backs, three wide receivers, one tight end, one kicker and a defense/special teams unit. All touchdowns are worth six points, and one point is awarded for every 25 passing yards and every 10 rushing and receiving yards. One point is added for passing, rushing and receiving touchdowns of 50 yards or more. A one-point bonus is added at 300 passing yards, and two points at 400 yards. One point is awarded at 150 rushing and receiving yards, and three points at 200 rushing and receiving yards. Two points are awarded for defensive sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries. There is a three-point bonus for a defensive shutout, and yards and points will factor into defensive scoring.
Our panel of experts included Commissioner.COM Fantasy Editorial Staff members Scott Engel, Michael Fabiano, Tristan H. Cockcroft, Daniel E. Dobish and David Gonos. Representing SportsLine.com's NFL team were Joe Ferreira, Bill Ruhl and Greg Bromberg. NFL.com was represented by Larry Divock, and SportsLine.com Fantasy Advisors Paul Prouty, Michael Levine and Matthew Lawrence completed our roster of 12 participants.
Players are listed on each team in order of when the owner was able to win a bid for that player and place him on his roster. Owners are listed in order of when they were allowed to call out bids. Each owner also provides a detailed analysis of his draft strategy and results.

| Above all else, I wanted to make sure I ended up with as many quality running backs as possible. Not only did I land two top-notch starters in Alexander and McAllister, I also picked up a handful of solid reserves like Dunn, Shipp and Peterson. None of my quarterbacks are superstar material, but Maddox and Pennington can both be solid starters. With great depth at running back, I'll certainly be in a position to make some favorable trades later in the year. My receivers are solid, and Ashley Lelie could turn out to be a good value pick. | I entered the draft with a list of "targeted" players and focused on acquiring as many as possible. I was able to land Clinton Portis for a decent price, and getting Fred Taylor could be a good bargain if he stays healthy. Once I spent my first $57, I sat back and let the rest of the owners spend their money. I was able to grab Donald Driver, Chad Johnson and Travis Taylor for good prices. With many owners a little light in the purse late in the draft, I was able to steal Daunte Culpepper and complete the Faulk Strategy by taking Troy Hambrick. I'm not thrilled with my tight ends, but I'll make a trade to upgrade the position. | |||||

| My strategy going into the draft was to hold firm on the player values I had set and to not overbid on any player. That plan changed to grabbing as many cheap starting running backs as possible. Of my seven running backs, six will get a large amount of their team's carries, if not all, and the seventh (Gordon) is the backup to the most questionable stud running back not named Priest. I will be making trades before the season starts, but I'll have to wait until some injuries play out. The value for the second-tier running backs was too good to not grab more than a handful. I also grabbed the top tight end, kicker and defense for a total of 14 percent of my salary cap. Manning for $10 in this scoring system (6 points for passing touchdowns) was the key to my auction. If he gets his interceptions under control, he'll be my star. | In this draft, I went in extremely high on Stephen Davis, whom I feel is capable of scoring 20 touchdowns now that he is away from Steve Spurrier. Terrell Owens is a player I also coveted very much. Some guys are unknown commodities, but Owens is tried and true and seemingly gets better every year. I also believe Keyshawn Johnson is primed for a big year in Tampa Bay. Billy Miller, Andre Davis and Cedrick Wilson are three sleepers I absolutely love. Carolina's defense will be solid again, Vanderjagt is a top five kicker and Garcia and Brady will be great again at quarterback. | |||||

| "Stars and scrubs" is a strategy I consider incredibly risky in Fantasy Baseball, but in Fantasy Football, I think it can work. The difference between the two sports is that here, rosters are smaller, so pouring at least half your budget into the running back position and filling the rest of your roster with the best bargains possible is almost a necessity. I figured I couldn't get three top backs on a $60-70 budget, so I poured that money into two top-of-the-line options (Tomlinson and Henry) and nabbed any late bargains I could. Fortunately, quarterbacks were cheap, so Gannon saved the strategy almost single-handedly. Depth is going to be a major issue, but I got several dirt-cheap sleepers (Walker, Buckhalter, Boerigter and Watson). | My strategy was to target certain players and not get caught up in bidding for too many others. I targeted Michael Vick and Ricky Williams. I was able to get Vick but Williams went too high in my opinion, so I looked at which receivers I could get for a modest amount of money. I was able to spend less that $20 for Corey Dillon, Plaxico Burress and Joe Horn, which gave me more flexibility to fill in the blanks. In retrospect I should have spent more to get a bigger-name running back, but I am not unhappy with Dillon. | |||||

| I feel good about getting Matt Hasselbeck. He came on strong at the end of last season for Seattle. He reminds me of Brett Favre in that he needed a couple of years to understand the intricacies of running the West Coast offense. Favre, knock on wood, just doesn't miss a snap. I gambled in some situations on youth and experience. I selected Charlie Rogers, Donte' Stallworth and Larry Johnson. Additionally, I selected Emmitt Smith and Tim Brown. Stallworth is entering his second season with one solid year under his belt. Youngsters Rogers and Johnson are unproven talents who could possibly break out early on. Smith is the primary option in the backfield in Arizona, but could lose playing time to Marcel Shipp, who performed well last season. With Brown, you question how much longer he can go. | I went into the draft with two basic strategies: Be patient, as auction drafts tend to drive up prices in the early going, and get a top-notch nucleus with a great quarterback, at least one great running back and a great receiver. I was only partly successful with strategy No. 1 as I held back on money early, but it quickly became apparent that a few top quarterbacks could be had later for easy money. Having said that, McNabb at $22 is still a good choice. Also, getting Marshall Faulk was key. At receiver, I got Hines Ward early at a good price, but got an even better deal later with Jerry Porter. I'm a little weak at secondary tailbacks, but hopefully Pittman will steer clear of trouble. | |||||

| I went in with the strategy to lay off the first few players up for bid so I could get a better sense of what I should be paying for my players. I was figuring I'd spend between 60 to 70 percent of my money on my starters, which should also give me a solid bench. With the very high prices that were established early on, I quickly realized I'd be able to land quality players cheaply towards the end of the draft, which I was able to do. I'm very strong at wide receiver and quarterback, and I may need to deal from one of those positions to improve my running back situation. But I'm very happy with the team I have. My strategy allowed me to get Isaac Bruce, Aaron Brooks, Steve McNair and Marty Booker for a combined total of $19. | I really wanted Ricky Williams, but paid a little more than I had expected to get him. This caused me to have to find value elsewhere. I think I found some in Rod Smith and Kevan Barlow. And if Kurt Warner can bounce back, he's a solid bargain at $11. I feel I filled the rest of my starting roster out with some quality talent in Troy Brown, Chris Chambers, Bubba Franks, Olindo Mare and the Ravens Defense. McCardell could be a solid backup receiver, but Andre Johnson and Muhsin Muhammad don't necessarily make my toes tingle as far as Fantasy numbers go. Moe Williams could get the job in Minnesota, but Jamel White will have little value unless William Green gets hurt. | |||||

| I came into this draft with the intention of getting one of the top four running backs in the game (Ricky Williams, Tomlinson, Holmes or Marshall Faulk). I got Priest and Tiki Barber, and was able to get Bledsoe at a fair price of $11. Josh Reed was a steal for $3 -- getting a quarterback/wide receiver connection is always something I look for. I think Reed will do an admirable job replacing Peerless Price in Buffalo. My receiving corps is a bit weak. I have six guys that should post very similar numbers (800 yds, six-touchdown range). I expect Santana Moss to have a bigger year since Laveranues Coles left for Washington. My tight end spot is solid with Tony Gonzalez and Pollard. | Going in my plan was to not pay too high a price for a premium running back. Acquiring Edgerrin James for $21 appears to be well below market value considering his potential. While I wasn't able to acquire another top back as they all went for $35 or more, I was able to achieve great values at wide receiver and tight end. Drafting Boston, Price, Randy Moss and Shockey for a combined $55 appears to be great value as it is just a little more than one top back would have cost. Since I was unable to acquire that second stud back I went with some guys that are hit or miss. I am pretty thin at quarterback, yet I did accomplish my goal of attaining at least one duo. Collins to Shockey could be very exciting. If all goes according to plan I can trade one of my receivers for a top No. 2 back. | |||||
