Severino Gonzalez: Let go by Miami
The Marlins released Gonzalez on Monday, Triple-A New Orleans radio broadcaster Tim Grubbs reports.
The Marlins outrighted Gonzalez to Triple-A in early April, with the right-hander having spent all season with the affiliate until receiving his walking papers earlier this week. Gonzalez posted a 5.61 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 33.2 innings with New Orleans.

After seeing time in the majors in 2015 and 2016, Gonzalez spent all of 2017 in the upper levels of the minors, so it seems like he may have missed his opportunity to prove he can be an effective big-league reliever. He will offer organizational depth this season.

Gonzalez was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Monday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
A roster spot was needed for Monday's starter, Trevor Richards, and Gonzalez was the corresponding roster casualty. The 25-year-old was promoted to the majors over the weekend but went unused in Sunday's series finale against the Cubs. He'll report back to Triple-A New Orleans if he goes through waivers untouched.

With no shortage of extra innings to begin the season, the Marlins will continue their rotation of arms. Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans and will serve as the Marlins' 26th man for Tuesday's doubleheader with the Phillies, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Gonzalez has spent most of the season with Double-A Jacksonville, but was impressive upon moving up to New Orleans earlier this month, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out five. Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander finishes big-league camp with a 3.55 ERA but allowed four home runs, three of which came in one recent outing. Gonzalez's velocity jumped when he was kept in the bullpen in 2016 for the Phillies, and his 5.60 ERA hid nice peripherals (8.7 K/9, 1.8 BB/9). If he can creep into a starting role for the Marlins, the 24-year-old may find deep-league fantasy value at least during home starts in pitcher-friendly Marlins Park. Of course, his success as a reliever may limit him to that role in the future.

Marlins' Severino Gonzalez: Serves up three homers Monday
Gonzalez allowed three runs -- all from solo home runs -- on four hits over four innings while striking out two in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
He was facing most of New York's Opening Day lineup and the Mets do lead all of MLB in spring homers so far, but this was still not an encouraging outing for Gonzalez. The former Phillie will almost certainly begin the season with Triple-A New Orleans.

He was solid in his relief role, striking out 17 and only allowing one walk, but did allow 13 hits and five earned runs. The 23-year-old touted a 3.51 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP during 33.1 innings of work at Lehigh Valley this season. Gonzalez also spent time with Double-A Reading in 2016, posting a 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings on the mound. He made seven starts for the Phillies last season, going 3-3 with a 7.92 ERA, but has pitched well enough in the minors to earn himself another opportunity this season. Gonzalez isn't the most intimidating pitcher as he only tops out around 89 mph with his fastball, so he will have to work to get batters out at the next level.

Gonzalez allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings of work this spring. He could be second in line for a rotation spot if injuries require the Phillies to dip down into the minors early in the year. Eventually, he will be passed on the depth chart by Jake Thompson, Zach Eflin and Mark Appel.
