Yankees Negotiations With Cody Bellinger Stall Out

Player Outlook
Trent Grisham entered 2025 seeming like the odd man out in the Yankees' outfield, but he clubbed three homers in his first nine games of the year and delivered career highs in long balls (34), OPS (.812), RBI (74) and runs (87). His .235 average was a major improvement after batting below the Mendoza Line the previous three years, with a .249 xBA and .481 xSLG being well supported by a 46.4 percent hard-hit rate and 14.2 percent barrel rate. Despite the strength of the underlying numbers, the fact Grisham doubled his previous career high for home runs and hit just nine doubles make it difficult not to expect some regression in 2026. He accepted the Yankees' $22.025 million qualifying offer, so he'll at least have the benefit of the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium for another year, and he'll obviously begin 2026 with a stable starting role.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Idle Friday

Grisham is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against San Francisco. Grisham will dodge a same-handed matchup with Robbie Ray on Friday, allowing for Cody Bellinger to slide to center field and Randal Grichuk to patrol left field. Grisham went 1-for-5 with a two-RBI triple in the Yankees' season opener Wednesday.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Struggling in spring play

Grisham is slashing .143/.226/.179 with no homers, three RBI, one stolen base and a 3:8 BB:K through 11 Grapefruit League games. When Grisham accepted the Yankees' $22.025 million qualifying offer in November, it signaled that he'd be part of the team's starting outfield for 2026. While that remains the likely scenario, Grisham's poor spring highlights the fact that 23-year-old phenom Jasson Dominguez has exploded with a .371/.395/.686 slash line in exhibition play (along with three homers and three thefts) but doesn't have a path to everyday playing time. Given his contract, Grisham will probably get the opportunity to prove that last year's career-best campaign wasn't a fluke, but if he starts the season slowly, he could have Dominguez breathing down his neck.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Back with NYY on QO

Grish accepted the one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer from the Yankees on Tuesday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. The 29-year-old had a breakout 2025 with 34 homers and an .812 OPS in 143 regular-season games, and it's not a major surprise he accepted the qualifying offer given that he had a .651 OPS across the previous three seasons. Grisham should be back in center field for the Yankees in 2026, though it would be a bit surprising if he replicated the elite power production.

  • Trent Grisham: Given qualifying offer

The Yankees extended a one-year, $22.05 million qualifying offer to Grisham on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com Grisham, off the heels of a breakout 2025 campaign, will now have to decide whether to accept the option or pursue a deal in free agency. The veteran outfielder hit 34 homers during the regular season after never having previously hit more than 17 in a year, while his OPS jumped to .812 after not logging a figure higher than .675 in the three prior seasons. Thursday's move means the Yankees will receive draft compensation if the left-handed outfielder leaves in free agency.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Out of Friday's lineup

Grisham is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest against the Orioles. The left-handed-swinging Grisham will take a seat as the Orioles send lefty Trevor Rogers to the bump. Cody Bellinger will slide over to center field and Austin Slater will receive a start in left field.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Up to 34 homers

Grisham went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run and two walks in an 8-1 win over the White Sox on Wednesday. Grisham added to New York's lead with a two-run blast to center field in the eighth inning. The veteran outfielder has racked up 34 home runs on the campaign -- twice as many as his previous career-high mark, which he established in 2022 with San Diego. Grisham has also set career highs in RBI (74) and runs scored (84), and his .819 OPS is on pace to be his best as a pro as well.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Taking seat Friday

Grisham is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest in Baltimore. The left-handed-hitting Grisham started against a lefty in Thursday's series opener, but he'll take a seat Friday as the Orioles send southpaw Trevor Rogers to the bump. Cody Bellinger will hold down center field for the Yankees.

Grisham went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 10-5 win over the Twins. Grisham now has seven multi-homer games for his career, and five of them have come in 2025. Perhaps even more remarkably, three of these efforts have occurred in his last 26 outings (112 plate appearances), during which Grisham is slashing .223/.339/.606 with 12 round trippers, 25 RBI and two stolen bases to boost his OPS to a career-high .825 for the year.

The center fielder is putting together a career-best season, slashing .238/.347/.465 with nine doubles, a triple, 31 homers and 67 RBI through 133 games. The homer and RBI did both break a rare nine-game drought where Grisham was shut out in both categories.

Grisham is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. With ace southpaw Garrett Crochet on the bump for Boston, Grisham will head to the bench along with fellow left-handed hitters Ryan McMahon and Austin Wells. Grisham's absence will open up a spot in the outfield for Austin Slater, who will cover right field and bat leadoff.

The outfielder has surged in recent weeks, swatting nine of his 30 long balls over his last 15 games. He's settled in as the Yankees' leadoff hitter versus right-handed pitchers, batting .247 with an .840 OPS across 123 contests.

The veteran outfielder is hitting .248 with an .841 OPS, 29 homers, 61 RBI, 73 runs scored and three stolen bases across 121 contests this season. • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Leads off with homer Wednesday

Grisham went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 11-2 win over Washington. Grisham set the tone right away for New York, swatting a 334-foot solo shot to open the bottom half of the first inning on a day when the Yankees ended up with six long balls as a team. The veteran outfielder continues to build on a career-best campaign, and through 24 games in August he's posted an .881 OPS with eight homers, 11 RBI, 17 runs, a stolen base and a 15:19 BB:K. • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Goes yard twice in win

Grisham went 3-for-5 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Rays. Long balls in the first and eighth innings contributed to another Yankees barrage, and per Andy Nesbitt of SI.com, they're the first team since the 1999 Reds to launch 14 homers over a two-game span. Grisham has already blown past his previous high for home runs in a season, slugging 23 in 109 contests. • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Crosses plate four times in win

Grisham went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and a walk in Saturday's win over the Cardinals. It was the second time this season the center fielder notched four hits in a game, with the first coming June 25. The 28-year-old has kept his strong season rolling into August, slashing .269/.377/.442 with three homers and six RBI across 14 games this month.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Plays hero Saturday

Grisham went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Astros. Grisham continues to add to his career-high homer total of 21, and four of them have come in the last 10 games, a stretch in which he's batting .258 (8-for-31) with a steal, six RBI and seven runs.

Grisham went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, two additional runs scored and a walk in Friday's 13-12 loss to the Marlins. Grisham added his 19th homer of the season, and he crossed the plate at least three times on his second occasion this year. Aaron Judge's (elbow) absence has helped solidify Grisham's everyday role, although the latter has done well in his own right to maintain that status. Across his last 30 contests, Grisham has slashed .272/.375/.495 with six big flies, five doubles and 15 RBI.

  • Yankees' Trent Grisham: Leading off in third straight game

Grisham will start in center field and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Grisham has produced a .949 OPS so far this month, and manager Aaron Boone will reward him by including him in the lineup as the leadoff man for a third consecutive matchup with a right-handed pitcher (Chris Bassitt). The outfielder had seemingly moved into more of a part-time role against righties in recent weeks, but Grisham could see more opportunities while Jasson Dominguez -- who has gone 0-for-16 with six strikeouts in his last four games -- continues to slump.
