  • Mariners' Luis F. Castillo: Optioned to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Castillo to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday. Castillo's time with the big-league club was less than spectacular, as he'll head back to the minors after giving up seven runs (six earned) over seven total innings alongside a 5:7 K:BB. With George Kirby (shoulder) not expected back until May, the Mariners are again left with an opening in their rotation, and it's currently unclear who will be chosen next to fill the gap.

  • Mariners' Luis F. Castillo: Drawing another start

Castillo is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday versus the Astros in Seattle, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Castillo made his Seattle debut and his first MLB start in San Francisco on Friday, when he struck out two and allowed three runs on six hits and six hits over three innings in a no-decision. While not overly impressive, Castillo's performance was good enough to earn him another turn through the rotation, but he likely won't be in store for an extended stay with Seattle. As soon as George Kirby (shoulder) completes a rehab assignment and is deemed ready to make his MLB season debut, Castillo will be the odd man out of the rotation, barring injuries to any of Seattle's other four starters.

  • Mariners' Luis F. Castillo: Inefficient in first start

Castillo allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over three innings, taking a no-decision in Friday's extra-innings loss to the Giants. Castillo's first major-league start was nothing to write home about. He allowed an RBI single to Matt Chapman in the first inning and a two-run double to LaMonte Wade in the second. Castillo finished with 39 strikes on 68 pitches and forced the Mariners to dip into their bullpen early, with all eight relievers getting action in this contest. Castillo's only other major-league experience came in 2022 with the Tigers, when he threw 3.2 innings scoreless innings of relief. The fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation remains unsettled until George Kirby (shoulder) is ready for his season debut, but if Castillo gets another turn, he's lined up to face the Astros next week.

  • Mariners' Luis F. Castillo: Contract selected for start

The Mariners selected Castillo's contract from Triple-A Tacoma, and he's scheduled to start Friday against the Giants. The right-hander allowed one run over 5.2 innings during his lone start for Tacoma this year and will now get a look in the big-league rotation. Castillo's only major-league experience came with Detroit in 2022, when he delivered a 4:0 K:BB over 3.2 scoreless frames in three appearances. He spent the 2023 and 2024 campaigns pitching in Japan and had a 3.01 ERA across 143.1 innings before inking a minor-league deal with Seattle during the offseason.

  • Mariners' Luis F. Castillo: Sent out of big-league camp

The Mariners reassigned Castillo to minor-league camp Monday. After spending the past two seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, Castillo returned stateside over the winter, joining the Mariners on a minor-league deal that included an invitation to spring training. The 30-year-old didn't mount much of a case for a spot in Seattle's Opening Day bullpen, giving up three earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings across his three Cactus League appearances. Castillo is expected to report to Triple-A Tacoma to begin the 2025 season.

  • Tigers' Luis Castillo: Loses spot on 40-man roster

Castillo cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Castillo appeared in three games for the Tigers in 2022, so it's not a major surprise he won't remain on the 40-man roster through the offseason. He spent most of the year at Toledo, where he had a 1.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB over 41.1 innings.

  • Tigers' Luis Castillo: Optioned to Triple-A

Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Castillo will head back to the minors after being called up Sunday and delivering 1.2 scoreless innings Monday against the Angels. The 27-year-old righty has been dominant at Triple-A Toledo this season with a 1.79 ERA and 1.20 WHIP and has 38 strikeouts over 40.1 innings out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Luis Castillo: Called up by Tigers

Castillo was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Castillo has been dominant in the minors this year, posting a 1.79 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 40.1 innings over 39 appearances at Toledo. He's tossed two scoreless innings in the majors and will rejoin the Tigers' bullpen after Michael Pineda was designated for assignment Sunday.
