  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Assigned to minors

Askarov was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Sunday. The Sharks recalled Vitek Vanecek (face) from his minor-league conditioning assignment in a corresponding move. Askarov will play in the AHL All-Star Classic on Monday and participate in Sunday's AHL All-Star Skills Competition. He has a 4-6-2 record with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage in 13 NHL appearances this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Chased early in second period

Askarov stopped seven of 11 shots in Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Kraken. Consistency continues to elude Askarov, who has allowed three or more goals in five of his last six games. The Kraken blitzed him in the second period, scoring three goals in a span of 3:55 before head coach Ryan Warsofsky put Alexandar Georgiev in. For the season, Askarov is 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and an .896 save percentage over 13 appearances. It's looking more and more likely that he'll return to AHL San Jose once Vitek Vanecek (face) completes his conditioning stint. The Sharks are off until Tuesday's game versus the Canadiens, and by that time, Vanecek may be ready to come off injured reserve.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Expected starter for Thursday

Askarov is set to start in Thursday's road clash against Seattle, per Max Miller of NHL.com on Wednesday. Askarov stopped 29 of 30 shots (.967 save percentage) en route to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh on Monday. He's 4-5-2 with a 2.87 GAA and a .905 save percentage over 12 appearances in 2024-25. Seattle is tied for 17th in goals per game with 2.92.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Excellent in win over Pittsburgh

Askarov stopped 29 of 30 shots in Monday's 2-1 win over the Penguins. Askarov earned his first win since Jan. 4, snapping a four-game stretch in which he went 0-3-0 with a 4.51 GAA and an .852 save percentage. This was a step in the right direction, but between his lack of consistency and the Sharks' defensive woes, it's hard to trust Askarov in most fantasy formats -- even if he has an occasional strong outing from time to time.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Poor showing in relief

Askarov stopped 14 of 17 shots in relief of Alexandar Georgiev in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Panthers. Askarov will avoid taking a result from this game, but that's about the only positive. The Panthers eased up after a four-goal second period, but Askarov didn't do much better than Georgiev after entering the game early in the middle frame. He's winless over his last four outings, and Askarov has allowed 16 goals in that span. The 22-year-old remains at 3-5-2 through 11 appearances, but his GAA rose to 3.04, and his save percentage dropped to .898 due to Saturday's performance. The Sharks' next game is Monday at home versus the Penguins.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Loses to former team

Askarov stopped 32 of 38 shots in Thursday's 6-5 loss to the Predators. Askarov, who was dealt from Nashville to San Jose this past offseason, fared no better against his former team in this game than Alexandar Georgiev did Tuesday in Music City. This was Askarov's third straight loss, and he's allowed 13 goals in that span. The 22-year-old is down to 3-5-2 with a 2.93 GAA and a .903 save percentage over 10 contests. It's a poor time for a slump, as Vitek Vanecek (face) could resume practicing soon, and it's possible his return will lead to Askarov's return to the AHL if he can't get his performance back on track. Neither Askarov nor Georgiev will be recommended in fantasy for Saturday's home game against the Panthers.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Allows four goals in loss

Askarov stopped 27 of 31 shots in a 6-3 loss to Boston on Monday. The Bruins' fifth and sixth goals of the game were empty-netters. The Sharks had a 3-2 lead after two periods, but two goals by Charlie Coyle in the third frame put Boston in the driver's seat. Despite suffering from an illness, the 22-year-old Askarov was the backup behind Alexandar Georgiev in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Islanders. Askarov has lost his last two outings to drop to 3-4-2 this season, but he still has a 2.58 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Can't contain Wild's top line

Askarov allowed three goals on 22 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Wild. The Wild's top line scored in each period, though the last goal came with Askarov attempting to get off the ice for an extra attacker. Since he was caught in his own zone when the puck went in, the goal was still charged to him despite the 22-year-old having no chance to play the shot. He's had few poor outings so far, but this was among his worst at the NHL level this season. Askarov is down to 3-3-2 with a 2.39 GAA and a .917 save percentage over eight appearances. The Sharks begin a five-game road trip when they visit Detroit on Tuesday, and it wouldn't be surprising for Askarov to start three of those games, as Alexandar Georgiev hasn't done anything to justify earning more playing time.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Starting Saturday

Askarov will patrol the home crease versus Minnesota on Saturday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Askarov has been outstanding in limited action this season, going 3-2-2 with a 2.30 GAA and a .923 save percentage for the lowly Sharks. Askarov has spent most of the season at the AHL level, where he was 9-4-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .938 save percentage in 14 appearances. The Wild are scoring 3.00 goals per game this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: First off ice Thursday

Askarov was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate and is slated to defend the home crease versus Tampa Bay on Thursday, Max Miller of NHL.com reports. Askarov is 1-2-2 with the Sharks this season, surrendering 13 goals on 153 shots (.915 save percentage) as he is making his case to take over the top job in San Jose. The 22-year-old was selected 11th overall in 2020 by Nashville and was dealt to San Jose in the offseason. Askarov has a tough matchup, as the Lightning are averaging a league-high 3.94 goals per game this season.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Falls to Flames

Askarov allowed two goals on 32 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Flames. The third goal was an empty-netter. Despite the loss, Askarov's performance on Saturday was encouraging. The Flames' first goal was a tipped-in shot, and the second came on a power play, so there's not much blame to place on Askarov for either tally. Still, he's 1-2-2 with a 2.62 GAA and a .915 save percentage through five NHL outings this season. Vitek Vanecek is week-to-week with a fractured cheekbone, so Askarov will have an extended opportunity to challenge Alexandar Georgiev for playing time between the pipes. The Sharks' next game is Tuesday versus the Flyers.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Tending twine Saturday

Askarov will protect the home net versus Calgary on Saturday, according to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now. Askarov is coming off a 20-save effort in a 4-3 loss to Vancouver on Monday. He has surrendered 11 goals on 121 shots en route to a 1-1-2 record with the Sharks this season. Calgary ranks 25th in the league with 2.71 goals per game in 2024-25.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Stumbles in second period

Askarov allowed four goals on 24 shots in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Canucks. Askarov took his first regulation loss in four games this season. He was done in by an awful finish to the second period -- he allowed three goals in a span of 1:10, and that was too much for the Sharks to come back from. The 22-year-old goalie is 1-1-2 with a 2.75 GAA and a .909 save percentage so far. He'll share the goaltending duties with Alexandar Georgiev, at least until Vitek Vanecek (upper body) is cleared to return.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Joining NHL club

Askarov was recalled from AHL San Jose on Wednesday. Askarov's promotion comes after Vitek Vanecek was hit by an errant puck during Tuesday's matchup with Winnipeg. Considering Alexandar Georgiev has given up a combined seven goals on 53 shots (.868 save percentage) in his last two outings, the Sharks may have been planning to give Tuesday's start versus Colorado to Vanecek. Instead, it could be an opportunity for Askarov to make his third NHL appearance this season -- or the team will simply go back to Georgiev.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Sent down Tuesday

Askarov was assigned to AHL San Jose on Tuesday. Askarov picked up his first win as a Shark on Monday in a 7-2 victory over the Kings. Given his performance, this transaction could be a paper move to allow San Jose to accrue cap space, but that remains to be seen. Through two NHL appearances in 2024-25, Askarov is 1-0-1 with a .927 save percentage and a 1.96 GAA.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Defeats division rival

Askarov stopped 22 of 24 shots in Monday's 7-2 win over the Kings. Askarov received plenty of goal support in his first home game as a Shark. He also had an assist on Nico Sturm's opening tally to help his own cause in his first win of the season. Askarov has allowed four goals on 55 shots while going 1-0-1 through two games this season. The Sharks are currently carrying three goalies and no spare defensemen, so Askarov could end up getting sent to AHL San Jose once Marc-Edouard Vlasic (back) is ready to make his season debut or the team decides to recall Jack Thompson for depth purposes.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Shipped down to minors

Askarov (lower body) was demoted to AHL San Jose on Friday. When Askarov was acquired by San Jose in a trade from Nashville during the offseason, there was speculation that he would supplant Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek as the No. 1 option between the pipes for the Sharks. Instead, the 22-year-old Askarov has been sent down to the minors to open the season, perhaps in part due to the lower-body injury that limited him during training camp. Even with the demotion, it seems unlikely this will be the last time Askarov graces the NHL roster this year.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Returns to ice

Askarov (lower body) skated on his own Monday for the first time during training camp, Max Miller of NHL.com reports. Askarov will most likely not be ready for Opening Night, but he seems to be progressing well with his recovery. The 22-year-old told reporters Sept. 21 that his injury was not significant, and that he hoped to return to the ice in short order, according to Miller. Askarov was a first-round pick by Nashville in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and he was acquired in a trade by San Jose in August.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Missing from Tuesday's skate

Askarov (lower body) was not in attendance for Tuesday's game-day skate and will miss out versus Anaheim, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Askarov came into training camp with high expectations but a lower-body injury has kept him from getting on the ice with his teammates. Set to compete for the starting job for Opening Night against St. Louis on Oct. 10, an extended absence could open the door for either Mackenzie Blackwood or Vitek Vanecek to step up. Still, unless Askarov is out long-term, he should eventually claim the No. 1 gig in San Jose.

  • Sharks' Yaroslav Askarov: Not ready for training camp

Askarov will miss the start of training camp with a lower-body injury. Askarov is expected to be the No. 1 goaltender with the Sharks this season, after he was dealt from Nashville on Aug. 23. The 11th overall pick by the Predators in 2020, Askarov is considered by many to be the best goaltender not playing in the NHL. He was 30-13-1 with a 2.39 GAA and a .911 save percentage for AHL Milwaukee last season.
