Hayes was summoned from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Monday.
Hayes has produced 19 goals and 30 points in 36 AHL outings this season. He scored a pair of goals in his NHL debut against Buffalo on Feb. 5. Hayes might be in the lineup for Thursday's matchup against New Jersey if Sidney Crosby (lower body) is unavailable.

Hayes scored three goals in AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 7-2 win over Springfield on Wednesday.
Hayes has eight goals and an assist over six AHL outings in February. The forward could be a candidate to rejoin Pittsburgh after the Olympic break, especially if Sidney Crosby's leg injury costs him some time. Hayes has 19 goals and 30 points in 35 AHL contests this season.

Penguins' Avery Hayes: Hat trick for WBS on Saturday
Hayes scored three goals in AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 4-3 overtime win over Hershey on Saturday.
Hayes has seven goals and two assists during a seven-game point streak at the AHL level. He also scored twice Thursday in a win over the Sabres after his first NHL call-up. Hayes now has 16 goals, 26 points and 105 shots on net through 32 AHL outings. Given his quality of play over the last couple of years, he'll likely get additional looks with Pittsburgh.

Penguins' Avery Hayes: Shows off in NHL debut
Hayes scored twice on six shots, added two hits and went plus-2 in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Sabres.
Hayes got into the lineup for Noel Acciari (illness), and that ended up working out fine for the Penguins. Hayes scored on his first NHL shot at 9:18 of the first period, and he tallied again before the end of the opening frame, giving the Penguins a lead that they never relinquished. The 23-year-old has earned 23 points over 31 contests for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and he'll likely head back to the farm team in the coming days to continue playing during the NHL's Olympic break. That said, this likely isn't the last we've seen of Hayes at the NHL level.

Hayes was recalled from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Thursday.
Hayes could be in line to make his NHL debut against the Sabres on Thursday if Noel Acciari (illness) is unable to play. In 31 minor-league tilts with the Baby Pens, the 23-year-old winger has notched 13 goals and 10 helpers while also racking up 41 PIM. If Hayes does play Thursday, he will likely slot into a bottom-six role.

Hayes had a strong training camp but didn't make the Penguins' NHL roster. He's off to a decent start in the AHL this year, his third season in the league, racking up five goals and eight points over 13 appearances. He put up 23 goals and 19 helpers in 60 regular-season contests a year ago, which led to him signing a two-year, entry-level contract in March.
