This is where we all pretend like we know what's going to happen.
Prospecting: It's like throwing darts at a board. Those of us who study the stats and scouting reports have an idea of each prospect's strengths and weaknesses, but when it comes to actually ranking them, it's just one man's opinion vs. another's.
Add the complications of Fantasy, where different prospects have different significance across different formats, and what's already a highly subjective exercise becomes all the more distorted.
My approach has always been to accept it for what it is: imperfection.
Having played in just about every conceivable format, I've determined these 50 prospects to be the ones of greatest significance to Fantasy owners. Most are close to contributing in the majors, but some aren't. To help you gauge proximity, I've assigned each player a 2015 impact rating according to the following scale:
10 -- Opening day lock
9 -- Pencil him in
8 -- Fighting this spring
7
-- Sooner than later
6 -- Midseason hopeful
5 -- Second-half
reinforcement
4 -- September call-up
3 -- If he moves fast
2 --
Only in an emergency
1 -- Not a chance
Therefore, players who rank high in the top 50 but low on the impact scale have especially high ceilings, and players who rank low in the top 50 but high on the impact scale ... well, let's call them second-tier. Bad prospects aren't making a top-50 list, no matter how close they are to contributing.
Is this list a perfect fit for your format? Probably not, but it helps narrow your focus in Fantasy to the prospects who matter most. How they apply to your specific format only you can say.
1. Kris Bryant, 3B, Cubs
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (1/4/92)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
.325 BA, 43 HR, 15 SB, 1.098 OPS, 86 BB, 162 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 8
Basically, pitchers look upon Bryant and tremble. Here's betting he's one of those prospects who doesn't need any transition time to the majors and just crushes everything from the get-go, making him well worth a middle-round investment even if he's a long shot to win a job in spring training.
2. Jorge Soler, OF, Cubs
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (2/25/92)
Where
played in 2014: Rookie, Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: .340 BA (200 at-bats), 15 HR, 23 2B, 1.132 OPS, 33 BB, 48 K
Major-league
stats: .292 BA (89 at-bats), 5 HR, 8 2B, .903 OPS, 6 BB, 24 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 10
For all the hype Bryant has gotten, Soler's numbers last year were just as good once he returned from a hamstring injury, and he's already had a successful audition in the majors. He's probably the first rookie off the board in single-season leagues.
3. Rusney Castillo, OF, Red Sox
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 27 (9/7/87)
Where
played in 2014: majors
Major-league stats: .333 BA (36
at-bats), 2 HR, 3 SB, .928 OPS, 3 BB, 6 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 10
After just a handful of minor-league postseason games to shake off the rust from a year-long layoff, Castillo wowed in 36 at-bats last year, showing off the power-speed combo and bat-on-ball skills that have some scouts comparing him to Andrew McCutchen. That's going a little far, but he's an exciting middle-round pick for sure.
4. Joc Pederson, OF, Dodgers
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 22 (4/21/92)
Where
played in 2014: Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats: .303
BA, 33 HR, 30 SB, 106 R, 1.017 OPS, 100 BB, 149 K
Major-league
stats: .143 BA (4 for 28), 9 BB, 11 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 10
Pederson isn't as revered in Fantasy as George Springer was at this time a year ago, which is strange since he already has a job to lose. A five-category contributor in the minors, he's a candidate to go 20-20 as a rookie even if his strikeout rate holds back his batting average.
5. Byron Buxton, OF, Twins
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (12/18/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.234 BA (124 at-bats), 4 HR, 6 SB, .702 OPS, 10 BB, 36 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 5
Between the sprained wrist, broken finger and concussion, Buxton didn't actually play much last year, and when he did, it didn't go well. The scouts are undeterred, though, ranking him up there with Bryant long-term. You wouldn't want to sell the so-called "next Mike Trout" short.
6. Miguel Sano, 3B, Twins
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (5/11/93)
Where
played in 2014: Did not play -- injured
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 6
Sano will need to prove he's recovered from Tommy John surgery before the Twins entrust him with anything, but he looked like he was on the verge of a promotion prior to the injury last spring. He's a bit one-dimensional, but Giancarlo Stanton-level production isn't out of the question.
7. Addison Russell, SS, Cubs
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (1/23/94)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.295 BA (258 at-bats), 13 HR, .858 OPS, 19 BB, 49 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 6
Prospects of Russell's caliber don't get "blocked," so even though his talents aren't as in demand as they were with the Athletics, you can trust the Cubs will find a spot for him when he proves ready. He may be the better overall player than Javier Baez even if his power is a step behind.
8. Noah Syndergaard, SP, Mets
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (8/29/92)
Where
played in 2014: Triple-A
Minor-league stats: 9-7, 4.60
ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 145 K, 133 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact: 7
While Syndergaard's stock may have slipped a bit with his disappointing showing at Triple-A Las Vegas last year, the hitter-friendly environment likely had something to do with it. At least he kept throwing strikes, unlike some newcomers to the Pacific Coast League. He'll be universally owned whenever he's called up.
9. Carlos Correa, SS, Astros
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (9/22/94)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A
Minor-league stats: .325 BA
(249 at-bats), 6 HR, 20 SB, .926 OPS, 36 BB, 45 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 3
If timetable wasn't a consideration, Correa would be in the top five. The offensive potential he brings to the shortstop position could make him a first-rounder in Fantasy someday, and unlike Russell, he's not at risk of getting bumped from the position.
10. Dylan Bundy, RP, Orioles
Bats:
Both | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (11/15/92)
Where
played in 2014: short-season Class A, high Class A
Major-league
stats: 1-3, 3.27 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 37 K, 41 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 6
After easing him back into game action last year, the Orioles won't place nearly as many restrictions on Bundy in his second year back from Tommy John surgery, allowing him, hopefully, to get back on the fast track to stardom. He was the talk of the minors just a couple years ago, remember.
11. Yasmany Tomas, OF, Diamondbacks
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 24 (11/14/90)
Where
played in 2014: Did not play -- in Cuba
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 10
The latest big signing out of Cuba, Tomas doesn't profile as another Jose Abreu or Yasiel Puig, but he should hit his share of home runs. A conservative estimate is Marlon Byrd-like production, and it's not like Tomas has peaked yet. If he ends up playing third base instead of the outfield, even better.
12. Joey Gallo, 3B, Rangers
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (11/19/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.271 BA, 42 HR, 106 RBI, 1.009 OPS, 87 BB, 179 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 3
Gallo's monster power carried over to the upper levels -- and with an improved walk rate to boot -- making him a favorite of prospect hounds everywhere, but strikeouts remain enough of a problem to render him something short of can't-miss. For now, the good overshadows the bad.
13. Corey Seager, SS, Dodgers
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (4/27/94)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.349, 20 HR, 50 2B, 97 RBI, 1.004 OPS, 40 BB, 115 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 3
Seager might be as good, if not better, than Addison Russell and Carlos Correa offensively, but he'll probably have to move off shortstop before he reaches the majors. His bat would translate anywhere, though, so perhaps by next year, he'll be top five on this list.
14. Jon Gray, SP, Rockies
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (11/5/91)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A
Minor-league stats: 10-5, 3.91
ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 113 K, 124 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact: 7
While Gray had the misfortune of being drafted by the wrong organization, he's an elite talent whose fastball has hit triple digits in the past. His collegiate experience makes him a good bet to break into the big leagues this year, but of course, few pitchers have been able to tame Coors Field.
15. Archie Bradley, SP, Diamondbacks
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (8/10/92)
Where
played in 2014: Rookie, Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
3-7, 4.45 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 75 K, 83 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact:
6
Bradley figured to be one of the first pitcher prospects up last year after compiling a sub-2.00 ERA in 2013, but an elbow strain and some control issues pushed back his timetable. He's a high-end enough prospect that the Diamondbacks will be extra careful with him even though he appears to be close.
16. Kyle Schwarber, OF, Cubs
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (3/5/93)
Where
played in 2014: short-season Class A, low Class A, high Class A
Minor-league
stats: .344 BA (262 at-bats), 18 HR, 18 2B, 1.061 OPS, 39 BB, 57 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 2
Schwarber was the first hitter selected in the 2014 draft and showed exactly why in his first half-season of at-bats, raking all the way to high Class A. The Cubs want to transition him back to catcher, which will slow his ascent to the big leagues but should improve his Fantasy value in the long run.
17. Lucas Giolito, SP, Nationals
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (7/14/94)
Where
played in 2014: low Class A
Minor-league stats: 10-2, 2.20
ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 110 K, 98 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact: 1
Giolito probably would have been the first pick in the 2012 draft if he didn't need Tommy John surgery, so now that he's recovered, it's no surprise he's arguably the best pitcher in the minors. He'll continue to build up his innings for now, but in a couple years, the Nationals could have another ace.
18. Julio Urias, SP, Dodgers
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 18 (8/12/96)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A
Minor-league stats: 2-2, 2.36
ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 109 K, 87 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact: 1
Urias' numbers last year are impressive enough at face value, but when you consider he compiled them in the most hitter-friendly league in all the minors and at the ripe old age of 17, you get a sense of just how bright his future is. It's all about upping his workload now.
19. Daniel Norris, RP, Blue Jays
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 21 (4/25/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: 12-2, 2.53 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 163 K, 124 2/3 IP
Major-league
stats: 0-0, 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 4 K, 6 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 8
After getting a taste of the majors last September, pitching mostly in relief, Norris is poised to join the starting rotation at some point this year, whether in spring training or June. He led all qualifying minor-leaguers in strikeouts per nine innings with especially good velocity for a lefty, so the hype is legit.
20. Aaron Sanchez, RP, Blue Jays
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (7/1/92)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats:
3-7, 3.95 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 84 K, 100 1/3 IP
Major-league stats:
2-2, 1.09 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 27 K, 33 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact:
9
Sanchez also throws hard and seems to be ahead of Daniel Norris in the pecking order, but his minor-league numbers, particularly the so-so-strikeout rate, suggest he still has work to do. If he doesn't secure a rotation spot this spring, he could wind up in the bullpen, perhaps as the closer.
21. Carlos Rodon, SP, White Sox
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 22 (12/10/92)
Where
played in 2014: Rookie, high Class A, Triple-A
Minor-league
stats: 0-0, 2.92 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 38 K, 24 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 7
The third overall pick in last year's draft, Rodon nearly got the call last September, but the White Sox thought better of it. They may try him out in the bullpen this spring as a way to ease him into a big-league workload -- the Chris Sale plan, if you will. His upside isn't too dissimilar.
22. Steven Souza, OF, Rays
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 25 (4/24/89)
Where
played in 2014: low Class A, high Class A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: .345 BA (357 at-bats), 18 HR, 28 SB, 1.004 OPS, 52 BB, 80 K
Major-league
stats: .130 BA (3 for 23), 2 HR, 3 BB, 7 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 10
The Rays must value Souza on about the same level as Wil Myers to have made the trade they did this offseason. A late bloomer who had maturity issues early in his career, Souza showed five-category potential in the minors last year and is all but assured a job this spring.
23. Dalton Pompey, OF, Blue Jays
Bats:
Both | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (12/11/92)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: .317 BA, 9 HR, 43 SB, .861 OPS, 52 BB, 84 K
Major-league
stats: .231 BA (39 at-bats), 1 HR, 2 3B, 1 SB, .738 OPS, 4 BB, 12 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 10
Pompey hit at each of his four stops last year, including going 8 for 25 with four extra-base hits in his final seven games in the majors. His speed and extra-base pop should make him relevant in all formats as the Blue Jays' projected center fielder.
24. Andrew Heaney, SP, Angels
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 23 (6/5/91)
Where played
in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats:
9-6, 3.28 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 143 K, 137 1/3 IP
Major-league stats:
0-3, 5.83 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 20 K, 29 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 9
Heaney didn't look so hot in seven appearances, including five starts, with the Marlins last season, but the Angels still saw plenty to like, acquiring him for Howie Kendrick in a three-team trade this offseason. His strikeout-to-walk ratio in the minors was pretty special for a left-hander, giving him a chance to be another Mike Minor.
25. Michael Taylor, OF, Nationals
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (3/26/91)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats:
.304 BA, 23 HR, 37 SB, .915 OPS, 57 BB, 144 K
Major-league stats:
.205 BA (39 at-bats), 1 HR, 3 2B, 0 SB, 2 CS, 3 BB, 17 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 8
For most teams, Taylor would be starting already, and Jayson Werth's shoulder surgery may open the door for him, at least to begin the year. Between Werth, Denard Span and Bryce Harper, the Nationals' injury-prone outfield figures to keep giving him chances. His power-speed combo could make Span expendable midseason.
26. Henry Owens, SP, Red Sox
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 22 (7/21/92)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
17-5, 2.94 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 170 K, 159 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 5
Owens looks like the best of a foursome of Red Sox pitching prospects that includes Eduardo Rodriguez, Brian Johnson and Matt Barnes, piling up strikeouts with a deceptive left-handed delivery and, at its best, a mid-90s fastball. The Red Sox have a need at the major-league level, so a hot start could expedite his timetable.
27. Tyler Glasnow, SP, Pirates
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (8/23/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A
Minor-league stats: 12-5,
1.74 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 157 K, 124 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact:
3
Glasnow throws hard to begin with and gets so much extension with his 6-foot-7 frame that hitters barely have time to react, which explains why they hit.174 against him last year. It also gives him a similar profile to Randy Johnson, who had much worse control issues to overcome at the same point in his career.
28. J.P. Crawford, SS, Phillies
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (1/11/95)
Where
played in 2014: low Class A, high Class A
Minor-league stats:
.285 BA, 11 HR, 24 SB, .781 OPS, 65 BB, 74 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 2
Crawford has the look of the next big shortstop prospect whenever Addison Russell and Carlos Correa graduate. He began to show some power last year to go along with his usable speed, and his advanced approach, which resulted in nearly as many walks as strikeouts, may allow him to move quicker than those two.
29. Maikel Franco, 3B, Phillies
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (8/26/92)
Where
played in 2014: Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats: .257,
16 HR, 33 2B, .727 OPS, 30 BB, 81 K
Major-league stats: .179
BA (56 at-bats), 2 2B, .404 OPS, 1 BB, 13 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 7
Franco's stock took a hit with a disappointing showing at Triple-A last year, but he maintained a low strikeout rate and finished on a high note, hitting .309 with 10 of his 16 homers after the All-Star break. He's talented enough to overtake Cody Asche this season, be it in spring training or later.
30. D.J. Peterson, 3B, Mariners
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (12/31/91)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.327 BA, 31 HR, 31 2B, .912 OPS, 45 BB, 116 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 5
Regarded by many as the best power bat in the 2013 draft, Peterson lived up to the billing in his first full professional season and didn't slow down with his midseason promotion to Double-A. He's a long shot to stick at third base with Kyle Seager locked up forever, which only gives him a clearer path to the majors.
31. Robert Stephenson, SP, Reds
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (2/24/93)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A
Minor-league stats: 7-10, 4.74
ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 140 K, 136 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy impact:
5
Stephenson has a clear path with Mat Latos and Alfredo Simon out of the picture, but he didn't take to Double-A as well as hoped last year, battling uncharacteristic wildness. He led the Southern League in strikeouts, though, so the front-line potential remains. Still, he'll need to make quick progress to reach the majors this year.
32. Blake Swihart, C, Red Sox
Bats:
Both | Throws: Right
Age: 22 (4/3/92)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
.293 BA (416 at-bats), 13 HR, .810 OPS, 31 BB, 80 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 4
The scouts loved Swihart's potential even when he was learning to catch and switch-hit on the fly, so now that his potential is showing up in his numbers, he's clearly a big deal in Fantasy. With the game's top catcher prospect breathing down his neck, Christian Vazquez may not be starting for long.
33. Francisco Lindor, SS, Indians
Bats:
Both | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (11/14/93)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
.276 BA, 11 HR, 28 SB, .727 OPS, 49 BB, 97 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 7
On the verge of taking over as the Indians' starting shortstop with Asdrubal Cabrera out of the picture, Lindor remains a work in progress offensively -- he's an inefficient base-stealer and had 31 total extra-base hits last year -- but he has the tools to become a serviceable leadoff type. His glove alone will earn him the call.
34. Dilson Herrera, 2B, Mets
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (3/3/94)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: .323 BA, 13 HR, 33 2B, 23 SB, .858 OPS, 47 BB, 96 K
Major-league
stats: .220 (59 at-bats), 3 HR, .710 OPS, 7 BB, 17 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 6
One of last year's biggest risers, Herrera showed five-category potential in the minors (kind of like Rougned Odor two years ago) and didn't embarrass himself as a 20-year-old pressed into big-league duty. The Mets have a replacement ready whenever they decide to unload Daniel Murphy.
35. Jose Peraza, 2B, Braves
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (4/30/94)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.339 BA, 2 HR, 60 SB, .806 OPS, 17 BB, 47 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 6
Clearly, the Braves don't want to rush Peraza at age 20, but they made sure to keep second base open for him, signing lowly Alberto Callaspo as a stopgap. With a high contact rate and aptitude for stealing bases, Peraza profiles as something like another Jose Altuve, though that's probably a dream scenario.
36. Alex Jackson, OF, Mariners
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 19 (12/25/95)
Where
played in 2014: Rookie
Minor-league stats: .280 BA (82
at-bats), 2 HR, 6 2B, .820 OPS, 9 BB, 24 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 1
The best high school hitter (and sixth overall pick) in the 2014 draft is seemingly a long way off at age 19, but he's polished enough to move fast, reaching the majors at maybe 21 or so. He's a future No. 3 hitter who'll hit for both average and power.
37. Jameson Taillon, SP, Pirates
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (11/18/91)
Where
played in 2014: Did not play -- injured
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 4
Four of the first five picks in the 2010 have already reached the big leagues. The one who hasn't is Taillon, and he's not exactly on the verge after losing all of last season to Tommy John surgery. He may need a year to build up his innings, but he's still worth the wait.
38. Brandon Finnegan, RP, Royals
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 21 (4/14/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: 0-4, 1.33 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 26 K, 27 IP
Major-league
stats: 0-1, 1.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 10 K, 7 IP
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 6
You probably caught a glimpse of Finnegan during the Royals' march to the World Series. He was the lefty they brought out of the bullpen to complement Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland. But his future is in the starting rotation, and since he's already shown he can retire big-leaguers, his day is nigh.
39. Aaron Nola, SP, Phillies
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 21 (6/4/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
4-3, 2.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 45 K, 55 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 6
Thought to be the most polished pitcher in the 2014 draft, Nola's return to Double-A to begin the year should be just a formality with Aaron Harang, David Buchanan and Jerome Williams filling out the back end of the starting rotation. His strikeout potential is up for debate, but he throws strikes and is as safe as pitching prospects come.
40. Mark Appel, SP, Astros
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (7/15/91)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
3-7, 6.91 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 78 K, 83 1/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 6
Appel could have gone first overall in 2012 and then actually did in 2013, which should put last year's struggles in perspective. He improved after a late-season promotion to Double-A and was even better in the Arizona Fall League, so don't be surprised if he becomes a fixture in the Astros rotation this summer.
41. David Dahl, OF, Rockies
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 20 (4/1/94)
Where
played in 2014: low Class A, high Class A
Minor-league stats:
.299 BA, 14 HR, 41 2B, 21 SB, .827 OPS, 28 BB, 92 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 3
Dahl bounced back from an injury-plagued 2013 with numbers that explain why the Rockies made him the 10th overall pick in 2012. Imagine Jacoby Ellsbury with a little more power and a little less speed playing half his games at Coors Field, and you'll understand why Dahl is such an attractive long-term keeper.
42. Jesse Winker, OF, Reds
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 21 (8/17/93)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.287 BA (282 at-bats), 15 HR, 20 2B, .917 OPS, 54 BB, 68 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 4
Winker showed off the full extent of his potential with 15 home runs in 282 at-bats last year. Granted, he did most of his damage in the heavy-hitting California League, but with a terrific batting eye and advanced approach at the plate, his ceiling is awfully high.
43. Devon Travis, 2B, Blue Jays
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (2/21/91)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A
Minor-league stats: .298 BA (396
at-bats), 10 HR, 16 SB, .817 OPS, 37 BB, 60 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 8
If Travis has a standout tool, it's a high contact rate that has made him a .317 hitter over his minor-league career, but he has at least usable power and speed. Most likely, the Blue Jays acquired him so they wouldn't have to start Maicer Izturis at second base, but Travis actually has to win the job first.
44. Mike Foltynewicz, RP, Braves
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 23 (10/7/91)
Where
played in 2014: Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats: 7-7,
5.08 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 102 K, 102 2/3 IP
Major-league stats:
0-1, 5.30 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 14 K, 18 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 8
Foltynewicz has earned comparisons to Garrett Richards, which is both good news and bad news. The good news is his 100-mph fastball could make him an ace someday. The bad news is he may need a few years to control it. We'll find out this spring how close he is.
45. Ryan Rua, OF, Rangers
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 24 (3/11/90)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league stats:
.306 BA, 18 HR, .866 OPS, 51 BB, 97 K
Major-league stats: .295
BA (105 at-bats), 2 HR, 7 2B, 2 BB, 18 K
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 9
Rua followed up an all-or-nothing 32-homer season in 2013 with a more even performance last year and made a strong enough impression in a late-season callup that he's probably the favorite for the starting left field job this spring. He doesn't have the pedigree, but he certainly has the numbers.
46. Jung Ho Kang, SS, Pirates
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 27 (4/5/87)
Where
played in 2014: Did not play -- in Korea
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 9
Anyone who claims to know how Kang's .356 batting average and 40 home runs will translate from Korea is lying, but we can safely assume he'll lose something off those numbers. Is he still a 15-to-20-homer guy with full-time at-bats? Since he isn't promised those at-bats from the get-go, you'll want to bid cautiously on him.
47. Pete O'Brien, C, Diamondbacks
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 24 (7/15/90)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A
Minor-league stats:
.271 BA (399 at-bats), 34 HR, .910 OPS, 21 BB, 111 K
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 6
The Yankees weren't convinced O'Brien could catch when they unloaded him in the Brandon McCarthy deal last year. The Diamondbacks are so convinced he can catch that they've made Tuffy Gosewisch his only obstacle. He might be an all-or-nothing type in the bigs, but at catcher, you could do much worse.
48. Micah Johnson, 2B, White Sox
Bats:
Left | Throws: Right
Age: 24 (12/18/90)
Where
played in 2014: Double-A, Triple-A
Minor-league stats:
.294 BA (419 at-bats), 5 HR, 22 SB, .754 OPS, 37 BB, 69 K
Scott's
2015 Fantasy impact: 7
Johnson went from stealing 84 bases in 2013 to stealing just 22 (in 35 attempts) last year, but a hamstring injury was largely to blame. He still profiles as the White Sox's eventual leadoff man and a major upgrade offensively over incumbent second baseman Carlos Sanchez.
49. Marco Gonzales, SP, Cardinals
Bats:
Left | Throws: Left
Age: 22 (2/16/92)
Where
played in 2014: high Class A, Double-A, Triple-A, majors
Minor-league
stats: 9-5, 2.43 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 117 K, 122 IP
Major-league
stats: 4-2, 4.15 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 31 K, 34 2/3 IP
Scott's 2015
Fantasy impact: 8
Rushed to the majors last June after only 19 professional starts, Gonzales struggled with his command, which was his calling card in the minors. He made the postseason roster as a reliever, but the Cardinals will probably want him ready to start should an opening arise midseason.
50. Raisel Iglesias, RP, Reds
Bats:
Right | Throws: Right
Age: 24 (4/1/90)
Where
played in 2014: Did not play -- in Cuba
Scott's 2015 Fantasy
impact: 7
Though Iglesias pitched almost exclusively in relief in Cuba, the Reds think he has the arsenal to start, boasting four plus pitches. His slider especially shows put-away potential. Because he hasn't pitched much over the last year-plus, he may open the year in the bullpen, but the Reds' lack of rotation depth works in his favor.
