The big takeaway from our first Head-to-Head points mock for 2022 is that it's more straightforward than Rotisserie. In that format -- or any that uses traditional 5x5 scoring -- the need for stolen bases puts you in a bind at the start of the draft, where the obvious choices (Fernando Tatis and Ronald Acuna) have major injury concerns. The trend lately has been for Trea Turner to claim that top spot, which indeed checks the stolen base box but also feels like a major concession.

Selecting Juan Soto first in a points league, on the other hand, feels just right given his stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio -- not to mention everything. And Vladimir Guerrero, another non-base stealer, is an easy choice right behind. In this scoring format, which rewards stolen bases but doesn't so much require them, those two are on closer to equal footing with players like Tatis and Acuna, which means you don't have to concede anything on the health or performance front.

But wait, I'm saying two hitters should be first off the board ... in a points league? Yes, the move away from starting pitching, which I outlined in our initial Rotisserie mock for 2022, impacts this format as well, if to a lesser degree. In fact, not a single starting pitcher went off the board until Walker Buehler at Pick 6, and only eight were selected within the first 24 picks. Things heat up from there, but the bottom line is that the fervor for high-end pitching appears to be just a one-year phenomenon. It's mostly because the new ball has created more separation in the hitter ranks, making the elite ones worth paying up for again.

Some other observations:

  • Freddie Freeman, a probable first-rounder in this format, slipped all the way to the end of Round 2. I was relieved to see him go just before my pick since I already had Guerrero.
  • Max Muncy in Round 3 would make sense in this format, big walker that he is, if not for the recent revelation that he has UCL damage in his elbow and isn't healing as quickly as he'd like. I've moved him way down in my rankings.
  • I'm content with my selection of Salvador Perez in Round 5. I only had one hitter up to that point and was looking for the highest-impact bat I could find. A catcher who plays more regularly than most and homers twice as often as nearly all would seem to fit the bill. Jose Altuve, who went four picks later would have been my second choice, but I was able to snag my fallback second baseman, Ketel Marte in Round 8. J.T. Realmuto, the consensus No. 2 catcher, also went in Round 8, but I prefer my Perez/Marte pairing to Altuve/Realmuto, thank you.
  • Trevor Bauer going in Round 6 is ... interesting. Marcell Ozuna, who would seem to have a clearer path to returning, didn't go until Round 17, but it's true Bauer would likely be the more impactful of the two if he's indeed invited back.
  • Ryan Pressly in Round 5, as the second closer off the board, was another head-scratcher for me. Liam Hendriks, who might be the consensus No. 1 reliever, went more than a full round later.
  • I also didn't care so much for Steven Matz in Round 8 or Dinelson Lamet in Round 16 -- both should go undrafted, in my mind -- but I'll stop picking on other people now.
  • Round 12 was another pivot point for me. I went with Willy Adames for my utility spot, optimistic about what a full season at American Family Field could mean for him. But since it was for my utility spot, I could have had Nelson Cruz a round earlier instead of making Chris Bassitt my sixth starting pitcher.
  • Clearly, I still gave deference to starting pitching in this draft, which seems reasonable since there were only nine hitter spots to fill. It left me boxed out at the shallow third base position, though, where I'll have to hope for a rebound from either Yoan Moncada (Round 17) or Matt Chapman (Round 18). Could be worse.
  • The big relief pitcher-eligible starting pitcher picks, which are always a thing in this format, were Ranger Suarez (Round 7), Luis Severino (Round 13) and Cal Quantrill (Round 15).
  • Several prospects went off the board aside from the obvious Bobby Witt (Round 9). The most notable include Adley Rutschman (Round 12), Riley Greene (Round 16) and Julio Rodriguez (Round 21). Kind of feel like the Rangers' Josh Jung needs to be part of that group, especially given the scarcity at third base.
