Quantrill threw 5.2 hitless innings in Thursday's Cactus League win over the Giants, allowing one walk and striking out five. Quantrill set down 17 straight Giants to start the game, then walked the last batter he faced. This was a new level of dominance for the right-hander in what's been a challenging spring -- he has a 5.25 ERA and 10:3 K:BB across 12 innings over four starts. Despite the struggles, he's a lock for the Guardians' rotation to open the season, and Quantrill's ability to maintain a good ERA and absorb innings gives him some appeal in fantasy.... See More ... Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Tinkering with pitch mix
Quantrill worked to refine his curveball and add a splitter to his arsenal during the offseason, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Quantrill's search for new and revised pitches comes from the fact that he doesn't often boast swing-and-miss stuff. His 6.2 K/9 last season was the lowest of his career, though his 3.38 ERA and 1.21 WHIP were perfectly fine as a middle-of-the-rotation starter. It's unclear how much the right-hander will bump up his curveball usage -- he threw it around four percent of the time in 2022, and he's still workshopping the splitter in spring training. In fantasy, Quantrill will again likely stabilize ratios without adding much to the strikeout total.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Strikes deal with Cleveland
Quantrill and the Guardians agreed on a one-year, $5.55 million contract Friday to avoid arbitration, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. The right-hander is coming off a strong season in 2022, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 128 punchouts over 186.1 innings in 32 starts with Cleveland. Quantrill seems locked into a mid-rotation role for the Guardians.... See More ... See Less -

Quantrill (15-5) earned the win Tuesday over Kansas City, striking out four in five innings while allowing a run on four hits. Quantrill scattered two singles over the first four innings Tuesday, holding the Royals scoreless. After retiring the first two batters in the fifth, he gave up consecutive hits and a run came around to score. The righty allowed one run in each of his last three starts, lowering his ERA for the season to 3.38. He is likely to get the start in Game 3 of the AL Wild Card series if that game is necessary.... Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Wins ninth straight decision
Quantrill (13-5) allowed three runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win over Minnesota. It wasn't the most impressive outing from Quantrill but Cleveland's lineup provided more than enough support for him to win his ninth consecutive decision. He tossed three scoreless frames before the Twins scored two runs in the fourth inning. Since Quantrill's last loss July 5, he's registered a 3.24 ERA over 14 starts, lowering his season ERA to 3.56 in the process. He's expected to take the mound in Texas this weekend.... See More ... Quantrill allowed three earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six across seven innings Wednesday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision. The primary damage against Quantrill came on a two-run homer by Mickey Moniak in the third inning. He pitched well otherwise and got timely outs, highlighted by two double-play groundouts. Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Start cut short by weather
Quantrill allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts over three-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Sunday. Quantrill was charged with individual runs in the first, third and fourth innings, the last of those coming after he was out of the game following a lengthy rain delay. He left in line for his first loss in 11 outings, but the Guardians rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning to get him off the hook. He's allowed multiple runs just twice in his last six starts, and he now has a 3.55 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 101:42 K:BB through 152 innings across 26 outings. The 27-year-old righty is projected for a road start in Minnesota next weekend.... See More ... See Less -

The 27-year-old is 5-0 in his last eight starts with a 1.08 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 47.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -

Quantrill bounced back from a couple of rough starts his last two times out with six big shutout innings against one of the best offenses in the AL. He found success by pitching to contact with his sinker to induce plenty of groundballs and relying on quality defense from the left side of his infield. The 27-year-old right-hander picked up his eighth win and lowered his ERA to 3.88 with the performance. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in front of a hometown crowd at Toronto next week.... See More ... See Less -

Quantrill didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 6-5 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four. The right-hander wasn't particularly sharp, tossing 56 of 94 pitches for strikes, but he left the game with the score tied 4-4. Quantrill hasn't been tagged with a loss in nearly a month, going 3-0 over his last five starts, but that's mostly thanks to the Cleveland offense -- he has a 4.76 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB through 28.1 innings over that stretch.... Quantrill exited after 97 pitches (58 strikes), and he'll carry a 3.75 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 67:31 K:BB through 105.2 innings into his next outing.... See More ... See Less -

T.J. Zuppe@TJZuppe12/31/1969There are typically few ways for a contending team to massively upgrade multiple spots. It’s usually a small upgrade or depth here and there. Cleveland got so little from DH and C. You add solid players there, that’s a massive, MASSIVE difference, even if they aren’t superstars.
