Ekblad scored 50 seconds into the third period to spark a four-goal comeback in Tuesday's 5-4 shootout win over Boston. Ekblad powered a one-timer through Tuukka Rask to put one on the board for the Panthers after they fell down 4-0. The Cats put up three more in the third to send the game to extra time before winning in the shootout. Ekblad is on pace to have his best season offensively, with two goals and 10 points through 17 games.
Ekblad fired five shots on goal for the third game in a row, as the Panthers won 6-5 in a shootout against the Rangers on Sunday. It's only 16 games in, and Ekblad already has a quarter of the shots he had last season. His 47 shots on goal are 11th among defensemen, but Ekblad hasn't had much luck converting on his chances with only one goal to his name so far. He seems to have more luck when he picks his spots -- his career low in goals (10) came in the 2016-17 season, which featured a career-high 225 shots.
Ekblad managed two assists, three shots on goal and a plus-2 rating in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win over the Avalanche. Ekblad set up Colton Sceviour in the first period and Jonathan Huberdeau in the third. Both of Ekblad's assists came on the Panthers' two equalizing goals in the game. The 23-year-old defenseman has eight points and 29 shots on goal in 12 contests this year. He's yet to cross the 40-point threshold in his first five seasons, but 2019-20 is seeming like the best chance to do just that for the first-overall pick from 2014.
Ekblad (illness) will return to action against the Flames on Thursday, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports. Ekblad is still looking for his first goal of the season, but he's racked up five helpers. The blueliner is averaging a career-high 25:20 of ice time to start the year and should continue to eat up big minutes, including time on the power play, making him a top-end fantasy option.
Ekblad (illness) won't play in Tuesday's home game against the Penguins, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports. Ekblad was unable to participate in warmups, and it's been revealed he's dealing with an illness. Anton Stralman will take over on the top defensive pairing alongside Mike Matheson.
