Reds manager David Bell said Akiyama (hamstring) could begin playing in rehab games at the organization's alternate site in the next 7-to-10 days, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Testing his injured left hamstring in a game setting will be the last hurdle Akiyama will need to clear in the recovery process for an injury that he sustained during a Cactus League game in mid-March. Bell said that if Akiyama can avoid any further setbacks in the simulated games, the 32-year-old would be on track to return from the 10-day injured list in the first week of May. Once activated, Akiyama would likely serve as the Reds' fourth or fifth outfielder.
Akiyama (hamstring) won't get into game action at the Reds' alternate site until near the end of April and won't rejoin the big-league squad until early or mid-May, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Akiyama picked up a hamstring injury in mid-March. He's progressing in his recovery and remains on track, but his issue is evidently a fairly significant one. Jesse Winker (illness) and Nick Senzel should continue to be near-everyday players in his absence.
Akiyama (hamstring) has been playing catch and has been able to hit off a tee, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. He has also been walking and running using machines. Akiyama's recovery at the alternate training site seems to be going well, and he could rejoin the big-league club later this month.
Akiyama (hamstring) has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 29. Akiyama picked up a hamstring injury in mid-March and recently resumed baseball activities. It's not yet clear when the 32-year-old will be cleared to return to game action, but Aristides Aquino and Tyler Naquin could see a slight uptick in playing time while Akiyama is sidelined.
Akiyama (hamstring) played catch Tuesday for the first time since his injury and walked around the outfield during batting practice, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. These were Akiyama's first baseball activities since getting hurt. He'll begin the season on the IL, though the Reds haven't yet made an official roster move.
