In what turned out to be a busy offseason for the Nashville Predators, general manager David Poile went on a spending spree in the bargain basement. He brought in Mike Ribeiro, Olli Jokinen and Derek Roy as declining players that would be lower-risk, high-reward type guys. But it also created a log jam at forward.

It looks like the Preds are trying to loosen that jam up a bit as the club waived Roy on Sunday.

With just one goal in 26 games, the 31-year-old has been unable to recapture the scoring touch that made him a star with the Buffalo Sabres. Ever since leaving Buffalo, the veteran center's numbers have declined precipitously. He really hasn't been the same since suffering a torn quad tendon in the 2010-11. He was a point-per-game player that season before missing the second half of the year.

Since his departuer from the Sabres in 2012-13, Roy has bounced around to four different teams.

That said, due to his experience, his affordable contract and his past success, any number of teams would be willing to take a risk on Roy, particularly struggling clubs like the Edmonton Oilers or maybe even the Dallas Stars where head coach Lindy Ruff has a history with Roy. If he clears waivers, he can be sent to Nashville's AHL affiliate in Milwaukee.

With Mike Fisher back in the lineup and youngsters like Filip Forsberg and Calle Jarnkrok coming into their own as NHL players, the Preds have reason to move on and open up that roster spot. But it will be extremely surprising if Roy actually clears.

In 692 NHL games over his career, Roy has posted 502 points.
