Unlike Houston's decision Wednesday to replace starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with Ryan Mallett, the words Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith used to describe his own team's quarterback future don't make much sense.

We already knew that Smith had demoted Mike Glennon in favor of Josh McCown -- Glennon said so himself Tuesday on his radio show -- but Smith then said something curious Wednesday.

Smith stated that nothing had changed and that he still regarded Glennon as the team's quarterback of the future. But he's starting McCown because "it's not about the future right now" and because the team needs a spark.

Recall, though, that Smith, almost immediately after he was hired, declared that McCown would be the starter. This, even though Glennon put up better-than-expected numbers as a rookie in 2013. Plus, the only reason Tampa Bay started Glennon in Week 4 was because McCown was dealing with a thumb injury.

So, the pronouncement that Glennon's future is bright is, frankly, hard to believe. But Smith -- whose team is in desperate need of a win -- likely doesn't worry about such things.
