  • DeWayne McBride: Back on Vikings' practice squad

McBride signed with Minnesota's practice squad Wednesday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. The 2023 seventh-round pick spent all of 2023 on the Vikings' practice squad and did not see any NFL action. McBride entered training camp competing for a depth spot in the backfield, but Minnesota opted to keep just two running backs -- Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler -- on the 53-man roster. McBride could be promoted to the active roster should Jones or Chandler miss time, but it's not guaranteed due to the Vikings also signing Myles Gaskin to the taxi squad.

  • DeWayne McBride: Loses roster spot

McBride was waived by the Vikings on Monday, Craig Peters of the team's official site reports. McBride spent last season on Minnesota's practice squad after failing to make the Vikings' initial 53-man roster, and he'd then signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January. The UAB product will now have to seek out an NFL opportunity elsewhere.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Limited to sideline work

McBride (knee) was limited to individual work on the sidelines during Thursday's practice session, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. McBride was seen with a wrap on his right knee Thursday, and he was held out of team drills. The 2023 seventh-round pick played 27 snaps (15 on offense, 12 on special teams) in the Vikings' second preseason game against the Browns, finishing the contest with 17 rushing yards on six carries. McBride is competing against Kene Nwangwu and Myles Gaskin for a depth running back role behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Heads to NFI list

The Vikings placed McBride (undisclosed) on their active/non-football injury list Monday. The nature and severity of McBride's injury is currently unknown, but he'll now begin Minnesota's training camp on the NFI list. McBride, a 2023 seventh-round pick out of UAB, is still eligible to practice or play at any point in the preseason, but this injury could jeopardize the 23-year-old's chances at making the Vikings' 53-man roster.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Signs deal with Minnesota

McBride signed a reserve/future contract with the Vikings on Monday, Craig Peters of the team's official website reports. McBride spent the entirety of the 2023 campaign on the Vikings' practice squad after the team picked him in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The running back will now look to secure a spot on Minnesota's 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 season.

  • DeWayne McBride: Stays with Vikings' practice squad

McBride signed with Minnesota's practice squad Wednesday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. McBride failed to make the team out of training camp, but the 2023 seventh-round pick out of UAB will remain in Minnesota's organization. He could eventually play a role for the Vikings, though the team's 53-man roster has a crowded running back room, which includes Alexander Mattison (undisclosed), Ty Chandler, Myles Gaskin and Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed).

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Leads backfield in final exhibtion

McBride rushed the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 18-17 preseason loss to the Cardinals. None of Alexander Mattison (undisclosed), Ty Chandler or Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) logged a carry, leaving McBride to lead the backfield. He was efficient with the opportunity and also punched in a score from one yard away. McBride will likely begun the regular season buried on the depth chart, though the uncertain health status of Mattison and Nwangwu could change things.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Remains buried on depth chart

McBride carried the ball six times for 18 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 24-16 preseason loss to the Titans. McBride saw only one carry in the first half, during which Ty Chandler earned the majority of the work. McBride did take the field more in the second half, highlighted by a one-yard touchdown plunge with just under six minutes remaining in the game. His usage suggests he's currently fourth on the depth chart, as neither Alexander Mattison (undisclosed) and Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) suited up.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Inks rookie deal

McBride (hamstring) signed a four-year contract with the Vikings on Tuesday, Craig Peters of the team's official site reports. Alec Lewis of The Athletic notes that the 2022 seventh-round pick, who wasn't able to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or at UAB's pro day due to a hamstring injury, was spotted at Tuesday practice. Now that he's presumably past the health concern, McBride will look to cement a depth role in a Minnesota backfield that currently includes Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu. That said, Cook's future with the team is unclear and if the Vikings part ways with him, McBride's chances of landing a Week 1 roster spot would improve.

  • Vikings' DeWayne McBride: Perfect landing spot in Minny

The Vikings selected McBride in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, 222nd overall. With plenty of rumors regarding the status of star running back Dalvin Cook, this becomes an interesting landing spot for the No. 2 rushing leader in college last season. McBride wasn't able to participate in the NFL Combine or UAB's Pro Day due to a hamstring injury, but by all accounts the talented back is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. While McBride is a shifty runner and reactive when hitting the hole, the 21-year-old recorded just five receptions throughout his collegiate career, and thus likely seemed destined for two-down work at the NFL level.
