O'Hoppe wore the golden sombrero in Thursday's loss to the Astros, so he'll get a breather in this one. Matt Thaiss is doing the catching for the Angels and will bat fifth.

Jeffers is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Jeffers is mired in a 4-for-32 slump and will take a seat for Friday's series opener in Boston. Christian Vazquez will step in behind the plate to catch for right-hander David Festa.

Alvarez is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Alvarez homered Thursday for the second time over the last three games, but he will be given a day of rest Friday. Luis Torrens will catch for the Mets and bat seventh.

Rortvedt is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Blue Jays.

Rortvedt is sporting an unsightly .136/.214/.173 batting line with a 32.6 percent strikeout rate since the beginning of August. He will yield to Logan Driscoll on Friday in the series opener.

Amaya is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Nationals.

Amaya caught each of the last two games but will get a breather during Friday's afternoon tilt. Christian Bethancourt will be behind the dish and bat ninth for the Cubs.

Triple-A Charlotte activated Quero (back) from the 7-day injured list Thursday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Quero was placed on the 7-day injured list in late August after injuring his back, but he's healthy for the final week-plus of the season. The 21-year-old appeared to have a chance of making his MLB debut with the White Sox down the stretch prior to the injury, but that's increasingly unlikely with just nine big-league games left on the schedule.

Singleton is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It's southpaw Tyler Anderson on the bump for the Angels, so the left-handed-hitting Singleton will grab a seat to begin the festivities. Yainer Diaz will draw the start at first base for the Astros and Victor Caratini will catch.

Mountcastle (wrist) reported to Triple-A Norfolk to begin a rehab assignment Friday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

The 27-year-old will get in a few games at Triple-A this weekend before potentially rejoining the Orioles early next week. Mountcastle has been sidelined nearly a month due to a sprained left wrist but should give Baltimore a boost for the final days of the regular season.

Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) will play in the Arizona Fall League, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Encarnacion-Strand was limited to just 29 games this season due to a wrist injury which eventually required surgery. He will make up for at-bats he lost during the year with some Fall League games and should head into spring training without any restrictions.

Gallo went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run Thursday's loss to the Cubs.

Gallo jumped on a hanging sinker from Drew Smyly in the top of the sixth and launched it into the stands for a three-run shot to give Washington a 6-5 lead. It marked the veteran slugger's third home run this month and the second in his last four games. However, he's still batting a putrid .086 (3-for-35) in September with seven RBI and three runs scored.

Schanuel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's loss to Houston.

Schanuel walked in his first trip to the plate and eventually stole third base after advancing to second on a Brandon Drury single. The first baseman would later add a single of his own to lead off the sixth, extending his hitting streak to 10 games in the process. Schanuel is batting .388 (14-for-36) over that 10-game stretch with one homer, seven RBI and three runs scored.

Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Pirates.

Goldschmidt had a pair of singles and was knocked in by Brendan Donovan both times for the Cardinals' lone runs of the game. After going 0-for-9 over four games from Sept. 14-17, Goldschmidt has bounced back a bit. The first baseman is now batting .290 (18-for-62) in September and has a .246/.303/.412 slash line with 21 home runs, 60 RBI, 27 runs scored and 11 steals over 146 contests overall.

The Red Sox recalled Grissom from Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

Grissom will take the spot on the 28-man roster vacated by Rob Refsnyder, who was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. Since being optioned to Worcester on Aug. 8 after being reinstated from the IL, Grissom has slashed .269/.407/.417 with five home runs and 24 RBI across 137 minor-league plate appearances. In the majors, he's slashing .148/.207/.160 with three RBI over 87 plate appearances.

Lux is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

The lefty-hitting Lux will begin Friday's contest on the bench with southpaw Kyle Freeland taking the mound for the Rockies. Enrique Hernandez will start at second base and bat ninth.

Keith (shoulder) is batting fifth as the designated hitter Friday against the Orioles.

The 23-year-old sat out Wednesday against the Royals after he suffered the shoulder injury during Tuesday's contest, but he's back in the lineup following Thursday's team off day. Keith is hitting .315 through 14 games in September, though he hasn't supplied a ton of pop with just two extra-base hits.

Drury is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Houston, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Drury started the last two games after returning from a five-game absence due to a hamstring injury, but he'll be given some rest Friday. Jack Lopez is occupying second base for the Angels.

Stott is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Mets.

The left-handed-hitting Stott will receive a breather as the Mets send southpaw David Peterson to the bump. Edmundo Sosa will play second base and bat seventh as the Phillies try to even up the series.

The Diamondbacks designated Guillorme for assignment Friday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

The transaction was made in order to free up a spot on the active roster for the return of Lourdes Gurriel from the injured list. Guillorme played a decent amount while Ketel Marte was injured, but his role has been limited since Marte returned to action.

Vargas isn't in the White Sox's lineup for Friday's game versus San Diego.

After going 1-for-11 with an RBI during Chicago's last series against the Angels, Vargas will get a breather to begin the Sox's three-game set with the Padres. While he rests, Bryan Ramos will fill in at the hot corner and bat eighth.

Jung is being shut down for a couple days with discomfort in his right wrist near the surgical site, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Make sure to get Jung out of Friday lineups and weekend lineups wherever you've got a healthy, active option. Jonathan Ornelas is starting at third base and batting ninth Friday. Jung will go to Arizona to meet with the surgeon Monday and the team is hopeful Jung will play during the season-ending road trip, which begins Tuesday in Oakland. With Texas out of playoff contention, it wouldn't be surprising if Jung doesn't return this season.

The Angels optioned Leblanc to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

Leblanc will end up as the Angels' roster casualty as Kevin Pillar (thumb) returns from the 10-day injured list. The 28-year-old Leblanc appeared in nine games after being recalled from the minors Sept. 1, going 3-for-15 with two homers, six RBI and five runs scored.

Jung is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Orioles.

It's the fourth time Jung has been on the bench in the past five games, though two of those contests came against left-handed pitchers. The 23-year-old hasn't helped himself with Detroit making a push for a playoff spot, as he has a .222/.364/.259 slash line through 15 games in September.

Riley (hand) will undergo a CT scan Monday to determine whether he can have his cast removed, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Being able to get the cast removed then will give Riley a shot to return at some point during the postseason should Atlanta make a run, although it's not clear how likely his return would be. Riley also revealed Friday that the fracture to his right hand he suffered back in mid-August was to his hamate bone.

Espinal is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Pirates.

After starting each of the previous 16 games, Espinal will begin Friday's series opener on the bench. Noelvi Marte will hold down third base for the Reds.

Fitzgerald is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Kansas City, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Fitzgerald started the last three games after missing the three contests prior to that with a back injury, but he'll get some rest Friday. Brett Wisely is filling in at shortstop for the Giants.

Rocchio is not in the lineup for Friday's game in St. Louis.

Rocchio had started each of the last eight contests, but he'll get a day off for the series opener. Daniel Schneemann will hold down shortstop for the Guardians.

Lindor (back) will attempt to go through a full slate of baseball activities pregame Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Lindor is not in Friday's lineup versus the Phillies, as he will miss a fifth straight start with his back injury. However, if he comes out of Friday's pregame workout well, he will have a shot to be back in the Mets' lineup Saturday. Lindor has started just one out of the team's last seven contests after tweaking his back one week ago.

McLain (shoulder/rib) will play in instructional league games this fall, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

McLain has missed the entire 2024 campaign following shoulder surgery and later a stress reaction in his rib cage, so he will get into some game action this fall to make up for lost time. Barring any setbacks, he should enter spring training with a clean bill of health.

Lindor (back) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Lindor resumed baseball activities Wednesday and seemingly could be back in the Mets' lineup any day now, but his back injury will keep him out for a fifth straight contest Friday. Luisangel Acuna will again hold down shortstop and bat ninth.

Moore went 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in a win over the Yankees on Thursday.

Moore had his most active game offensively since Sept. 4 by getting on the basepaths three times, and he commemorated the occasion with his 30th steal of the campaign. Despite Thursday's busy night, Moore has had a serviceable but relatively unremarkable month thus far, hitting .250 with two extra-base hits, four RBI, four walks, two stolen bases and two runs across 29 plate appearances over 13 games.

The Red Sox placed Refsnyder on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right forearm strain, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Refsnyder hasn't started a game since wrist discomfort caused him to be a late scratch from the lineup Sept. 12, though he was able to appear as a pinch hitter during Thursday's loss to Tampa Bay. Now, the 33-year-old outfielder will officially land on the injured list, putting an early end to his 2024 campaign. He'll conclude the season with a solid .283/.359/.471 slash line alongside 11 homers and 40 RBI across 306 plate appearances, and Vaughn Grissom will come up from the minors to fill his spot on the active roster.

Edman is absent from Friday's lineup against Colorado, Kirsten Watson of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

Over his last 12 games, Edman has slashed .327/.377/.755 with six home runs and 14 RBI across 53 plate appearances. He'll cede his spot in center field to Andy Pages on Friday, who will bat sixth in the lineup.

Robles (hand) is starting in right field and batting in the leadoff spot for Friday's game against Texas.

Robles was set to return from a two-game absence Thursday against the Yankees due to a right hand contusion, but he was a late scratch. He'll rejoin the starting lineup for the series opener and face Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom.

Mullins is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Detroit.

Mullins has faced southpaws this season, but he'll retreat to the dugout for the start of Friday's game with the Tigers sending left-hander Tyler Holton to the mound. Mullins recorded his 30th steal of the season Thursday against San Francisco, and since the All-Star break, he has a slash line of .253/.374/.452 with 14 stolen bases, eight home runs and 21 RBI across 176 plate appearances. Colton Cowser will start in center field and bat sixth.

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Brewers.

McCarthy is sitting Friday after a run of 14 consecutive starts, during which he posted a .211/.237/.211 slash line with no extra-base hits. Lourdes Gurriel (calf) is back in the lineup after being activated from the injured list while Corbin Carroll shifts to center field.

Renfroe is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Renfroe started the previous three games but will sit Friday amid a 1-for-16 slump. Adam Frazier will shift to right field while Maikel Garcia starts at the hot corner.

Nelson (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Nelson has been on the injured list since last Saturday due to shoulder inflammation. The fact he's been cleared to return to a mound after just a week on the IL bodes well for his chances of being activated after a minimum-length stay, but he still has a few more boxes to check before the D-backs can pencil him back into their rotation.

Lopez (shoulder) began playing catch Friday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Friday marks the first time Lopez has done any sort of throwing since landing on the injured list Sept. 11 with right shoulder inflammation. He remains without a timetable for his return, though one may emerge once he's cleared to throw off a mound.

The Rangers recalled Dunning from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

The right-hander was sent to Round Rock in late August but will rejoin Texas for the final stretch of the regular season. Dunning has started in 14 of his 24 appearances in the majors this season but is likely to fill a relief role this time around. He has a 5.38 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 85:39 K:BB across 90.1 innings.

Senga (calf) will throw 30-to-35 pitches over an inning or two with Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

The right-hander was hoping to make a rehab appearance with Syracuse this weekend before the end of the Triple-A season, and he's now on the schedule for Saturday. Assuming that appearance goes well, Senga could join the Mets in a relief capacity early next week for the final games of the regular season.

The Giants placed Hicks on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

It's the same injury he returned from less than a week ago and this trip back to the IL will end his season. Hicks' campaign started off promisingly as a member of the Giants' rotation with a 2.33 ERA in his first 11 starts. However, he finished with a 6.10 ERA in his last 18 appearances, getting demoted to the bullpen in the second half in addition to the two IL trips. The Giants plan to put him back into their rotation in 2025.

Greene (elbow) will rejoin the Reds' rotation Sunday versus the Pirates, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Greene will be on a limited pitch count after throwing a 52-pitch simulated game Tuesday. As long as he comes out of Sunday's outing with no problems, he'll be lined up to make one last start during the final weekend of the regular season in Chicago against the Cubs. Greene has been sidelined since mid-August with right elbow inflammation.

Kinley was placed on the Rockies' 15-day injured list Friday due to right elbow inflammation.

Kinley's placement on the injured list will end his season, and he'll finish the year with 12 saves and 15 holds while recording a 6.05 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 72:33 K:BB over 64 innings. Kinley took over as the Rockies' top closer after Victor Vodnik landed on the IL in mid-August, but the latter figures to reclaim that role for the rest of the regular season with the former on the shelf. Right-handed reliever Jake Bird was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

The Rockies recalled Bird from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday.

The move corresponds with Colorado placing right-hander Tyler Kinley on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. Bird has appeared in 32 major-league games out of the Rockies' bullpen this season and has registered a 4.95 ERA and 1.79 WHIP across 36.1 innings.

The Orioles placed Smith on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a groin strain, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Smith will be forced to sit for the rest of the regular season, and it's unclear whether the severity of the groin strain will keep him out of action throughout Baltimore's postseason run. Smith joined the Orioles in late June after being DFA'd and subsequently released by the Marlins. Working out of Baltimore's bullpen, Smith has posted a 5.74 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 26.2 innings. Southpaw reliever Danny Coulombe (elbow) was activated from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

Sanchez (shoulder) will throw one inning or 25 pitches with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.

Sanchez has been on the injured list since June 2 with right shoulder inflammation. He has tossed multiple live sessions since landing on the IL, and while he isn't expected to return in 2024, the 26-year-old right-hander will at least get some reps in a rehab assignment before the season is over. In his 14 outings (including seven starts) prior to landing on the IL, Sanchez had a 0-3 record with a 6.06 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 17:14 K:BB across 35.2 innings.

The Orioles activated Coulombe (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Coulombe had surgery in mid-June to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow, but he's made it back in time to get in a few appearances down the stretch of the regular season. The lefty was dynamite earlier this season before getting hurt, posting a 2.42 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 28:3 K:BB over 26 innings.

Holton will start Friday's game against the Orioles.

Holton will make his eighth start of the season Friday for Detroit as he continues to serve as an occasional opener. The left-hander has worked his way into the closing mix with eight saves this season, but it Jason Foley should be the favorite to enter should Detroit have a lead in the ninth inning Friday. Holton has a 2.12 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB across 89 innings this year.

O'Hearn isn't in Baltimore's lineup Friday against the Tigers.

With southpaw Tyler Holton set to open Friday's contest for Detroit, the lefty-hitting O'Hearn will take a seat on the bench. While he rests, Coby Mayo will pick up a start at first base and bat seventh.

Yoshida is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins.

The Twins are starting a right-hander in David Festa, but the left-handed-hitting Yoshida will nonetheless begin this one on the bench. After an excellent July and August, Yoshida is slashing just .231/.286/.365 so far in September. Tyler O'Neill will be Boston's designated hitter Friday.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Friday on MLB Network that it's "very unlikely" Ohtani (elbow) will pitch during the postseason.

Ohtani has been throwing off a mound and is expected to face hitters soon as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Manager Dave Roberts said earlier this month that the chances of Ohtani pitching out of the bullpen some during the playoffs are "not zero," but it was always an extreme long shot and Gomes added that it's "not in the plans as of now." On Thursday, Ohtani become the first player in major-league history to reach 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. He'll return to being a two-way player in 2025.

Manzardo went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-2 win over Minnesota.

Manzardo opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot off Simeon Woods Richardson. The 24-year-old Manzardo has swung the bat well since he was recalled on Sep. 1, going 15-for-42 (.357) with four homers in 16 games after batting just .207 with a .571 OPS across 30 contests in his first stint with the Guardians earlier this year.

Ohtani went 6-for-6 with three home runs, four runs scored, 10 RBI and two stolen bases Thursday in a 20-4 win against the Marlins.

Ohtani entered the game two homers and one stolen base short of recording the first 50-50 season in MLB history. He immediately picked up his stolen base, swiping third base after hitting a leadoff double in the first inning. Ohtani then went yard in back-to-back frames later in the contest to reach the record books. In addition to his season-long accomplishment, Ohtani also became the first player to record three home runs and two stolen bases in the same game, per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com.

McCutchen is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in St. Louis.

McCutchen had a couple hits and scored a run in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals, but he will begin Thursday's series finale on the bench. The Pirates are going with Bryan Reynolds at designated hitter and Nick Yorke in left field.
